Pre-Op Conference With the King

I called the doc today as scheduled. The first thing he wanted to do was confirm I wasn't sick. Proud to say that sickness was last week's news and that it wasn't even an option this week! I was a little worried that he'd have a problem with the recent illness, but he said, "As long as you're healthy on Thursday, that's all that really matters." Phew!

I asked him about a bowel prep due to my "sluggishness". He said he doesn't require one, but that I could use a Dulcolax suppository if needed the night before. No liquid diet, mag citrate, etc. Yea!!

I was concerned about when the estrogen replacement therapy would start as I'd heard so many different theories. He said, "We'll start it in the recovery room.. Why wait??" I was pretty pleased with that too.

He will use a pain pump/PCA (probably Morphine) for post-op pain control. He said it will be on a continuous low-dose with a button for bolus "bursts" of meds controlled by me as needed. He will make sure I have plenty of meds available for nausea as I expressed a concern based on past experiences.

Last but not least, he said he wanted to start the surgery "by 11:00". (It is scheduled for 11:00). He told me to be sure to show up no later than 9:00 even if the hospital calls and tells me I can come later. I got the impression that he wants to start no later than ON time, which is good. He said DH could bring the kids while I'm in surgery, but he was concerned that it would be a long and boring day for them. I agree!

I'm very pleased with the way it all went, and the answers I got to my questions! (Oops...forgot to ask about the horizontal vs. vertical incision). Oh well...Thursday's another day

Pre-Op Conference With the King

Hi, it sounds like you had a good chat with the "king". You could call and ask about the type of incision - that way , no surprises!

Do something fun while you're passing the last few days of waiting. Something that YOU really enjoy. And above all - stay healthy.
