12 days post op - is this feeling normal?

Hello Ladies!
I am 12 days post SAH/BSO and am still feeling like my insides are going to drop out when I walk around and especially when I go to the bathroom. Is this normal?
I'm also still having quite a bit of pain (cramping) when having a bm. Is this normal as well?
My doctor is out of the country and I won't be seeing her until the middle of January, but I can contact another doctor who's covering for her if I need to. I just hate to call him if what I'm experiencing is normal, especially since he doesn't know me or my history.
Thanks for all your input! It really helps to know that others out there have similar experiences.

It probably would be a good idea for you to call your doctor's office and speak with his nurse (not the receptionist). If you hav to see another doctor, he can get your medical history from your file.

It's always better to check with your doctor if you're experiencing anything that causes you concern. Please let us know what the doctor (or nurse) tells you.

I am 13 days post-op and I would say what you are feeling is normal. As far as the bowel thing goes...yes I still have mild discomfort when I go. It takes a lot more effort. Gas pains are the worst! Just eat foods that encourage easy elimination. Also you can take an over the counter stool softener. Not a laxative, a softener. That sometimes helps.

As far as feeling like things are falling out.....I am a large woman, size 20 and my incision is right in the crease of my large belly. One thing that has helped me tremendously is a binder worn around my hips and abdomen. It's basically just a stretchy, support material but really helps hold up the extra weight and take the strain off my belly. I wouldn't have survived this far without it. If you can't get your hands on any kind of binder, a good, heavy duty girdle-panty helps a lot to. Just anything that provides support without being too restrictive.

If you feel like you want to talk to the dr., don't feel bad about contacting the on-call dr. That's what they are they for.

Good luck on your recovery!

Hi Twinkles 1205,
I had my TAH on dec. 17th and I do still feel all of the things you described. Although I don't really feel like everything will fall out I do still have discomfort when I first stand up. It just takes more time. I do feel like it won't be long before I feel well and won't be needing the pain meds anymore. Make sure you are getting enough rest. I did not really do anything yesterday and today I woke up read the paper, ate breakfast and settled down for a 2 hour nap. I just listen to my body and also told myself that I will not permit myself to drive, because once I do it will be all over and there won't be anymore resting.

I had my surgery on 12-17. I feel the same way when I first get up, like my entire stomach is going to fall out. Going to the bathroom also is a bit odd-just wait until your body is ready to move it for you. Cramping is an issue too, just relax. I feel pretty good considering the surgery and am taking it VERY easy. I'm taking this opportunity to really let myself heal and relax! I figure I am the one who does EVERYTHING when I'm healthy, it's time for my family to take care of me for a couple of weeks. It has actually been great letting go of the responsibilities I have for a while.

Sleep in, take naps, take short walks, drink plenty of fluids(warm tea has helped me relax with the BM), and take it easy!

12 days post op - is this feeling normal?

I am 13 days post op from a TAH/BSO for uterine cancer. I feel several of the same things you are talking about......especially the BM and urinating. I am not getting the same signals as before surgery that I need to urinate. But, from reading posts here, I think it just takes time for everything to recover. I'm not taking anymore pain meds because the pain is intermittant and mild. But, I'm not doing much and feel oh so tired and down sometimes.

I have a question about walking. My Dr. said "no walking until 4-6 weeks." But, I think he meant exercise type, power walking. My husband had asked the question about walking and he was referring to exercise. Is it ok to just go for a stroll down the street?

I guess it depends on the doctors prefrences but I had to walk 3 times a day while still at the hospital and was told to walk everyday while home. I go every night for a short walk at slow pace until I can do it without needing to stop, than I will walk a bit farther. Right now by the time I make it home I'm exausted and the cathedar is so uncomfy. I hope it comes out in 2 days and than my moving around and walking will be better.
One question though for anyone that had to go home with a cathedar as well,....I had my radical hysto on the 15th so have my cathedat for 13 days now and my vagina looks swallon and I start to have some real stabbing pain from time to time as well as it seems like my cathedar isn't always draining as it should. I feel very full and than have to play with the tube to make it drain. Made me wanna jump out of bed and scream last night I was uncomfy and also how long until I can sleep on my side? I'm so tired of sleeping on my back and been using ambien to be able to fall a sleep. In the morning I wake up wanting to cry because my back aches so much

I'm 12 days post-op and had a TVH/BSO and vaginal repair. I feel like everything's gonna fall out the back door, if ya know what I mean. The BM's bother me too. Seems like I can pin point the spots that hurt as things are moving through me. The gas pains don't feel to great either. I've been getting crampy feelings the last few days. I've had more pain show up in the last couple days than the rest of the time. Guess it goes to show that the pain pills were helping while they lasted. I agree with calling the doc if you're in doubt though.
