Magnesium Citrate - How long start to finish?

I've gotta do the magnesium citrate thing Sunday for Monday surgery - drink 10 oz. I definitely do not want to spend all night in the bathroom. For those of you that had to do it, how long did it take before you could rest in peace so to speak?

Magnesium Citrate - How long start to finish?

Hi,

I haven't had my hyster yet, but I did have to drink that Magnesium stuff once before. The stuff kicked in REALLY FAST. I was having diarrhea within an hour of drinking it. Maybe even faster than that. And the diarrhea lasted all day and into the evening. I took it in the late morning. So I would say it takes about 12 hours to work out of your system. If you take it right before bed you WILL be up all night long. I would say try and take it earlier in the day and be finished by bedtime. You will be very tired after a whole day of diarrhea and will probably sleep really well that way. Good considering most people are wide awake the night before surgery with worry. You will most likely fall into bed and sleep like a baby. Oh, and if I were you, I would get some Tucks pads, baby wipes (with no alcohol in them), and perhaps even some Vaseline or A&D ointment. It comes on very fast and the diarrhea can really make you little bottom sore. The ointment helps keep the acidic stuff from making your skin raw, the baby wipes are best to clean yourself with afterward and aren't as abrasive as toilet paper is after a few hours of diarrhea. And the tucks pads soothe in between "episodes".

Good luck,

Allison

Magnesium Citrate - How long start to finish?

I started my cocktail at 4 pm day before surgery, and by 10 pm or so, ready to sleep. The next morning, it worked a little more, but when I left for the hospital about 10, all was well. (not exactly well, my hiney was SO sore!!!!)

My doc didn't require this prep, but I did it as I knew it would help me after the surgery and I was right. Had absolutely no problems in that department, not even much gas.
