what can this bladder thing be?

I started having intense spasms last week on Tuesday. I'd go to the bathroom and couldn't go. Then I finally would and would get up to leave the bathroom only to have more come out. I thought it was a bladder infection. Went to the obgyn on Thur and had a stick test done on urine. It was negative so they sent it for a culture. In the meantime they put me on macrobid (made me intensely sick) so switched me to lanoquin. Today nurse called and said urine culture is negative so quit the antibiotic and see a urologist. In the meantime -- I've developed a lovely yeast infection which I'm treating with monostat. The spasms have quit (mostly) but I still have trouble getting the flow started and it seems to not completely empty until I stand up. Any ideas?

Gidge,
Ask your urologist about the Estring Ring. I had it prescribed and tried it about 6 months ago for vaginal dryness. The doc told me it is commonly used to reduce urinary pain/frequency in hysterectomy patients. At that time, I didn't have this problem! I'm thinking this is estrogen based. There are no estrogen receptors in the vagina anymore. The estrogen we take orally or in creams/patches can't get to that area. Maybe this bladder stuff is due to a thinning wall of the vagina due to lack of estrogen causing atrophe to the bladder???? I see the urologist on Wednesday. I've never met him -- don't have high expectations either. Just hoping for help. Keeping you in my prayers!

Hi Jill, I can't remember what HRT you are on. Progesterone can cause symptoms of a bladder infection according to the insert that came with mine. A number of us have found that in the jungle.

(((Jill)))
You are right about some of this being an estrogen problem. But before we can assume that you need to have a thorough workup done by a Urologist, preferably a Urogynacologist. I just had one done and will give you the link to their website for more info. It explains common problems and solutions, a must for all of us with bladder problems. Don't have my results yet but I know that some of the problems worsened by going off HRT. Start back on it today so it will be interesting to see how it goes. I know it won't 'cure' it but it helps.
