TAH? How long in Hosp?

I am still gathering all of the very pertinant information needed for my surgery (scheduled for 03/22/04). How long do they like to keep you in the hosp? and what is the difference between a TAH & a SAH? I am having my Cervix removed due to consistant dysplasia, and my other stuff removed because of extreme excessive bleeding with LOTS of pain. Oh, and I have Endo. I would appreciate some feedback. I am just not sure what to expect. I did have a c-section, but I am not sure how similar those two are...thanks and good luck to all.

TAH? How long in Hosp?

Bilateral Salpingo Oorectomy (or something like that) It mean that they are removing my ovaries and tubes in addition to the removal of cervix and uterus.

TAH? How long in Hosp?

TAH - Total Abdominal Hyst. They take uterus and cervix out through an abdominal incision

SAH - supracervical abdominal Hyst. Take uterus only leaving cervix through an abdominal incision.

BSO - Bilateral Salpingo-oophorectomy - removing both (bilateral) tubes (salpingo) and ovaries (ooporectomy).

Also for you info -

TVH - total vaginal hyst - removing cervix and uterus through the vagina

LAVH - laparscopic assisted vaginal hyst - uses laparscopic camera inserted through belly button and other small incisions and then pulled through vaginally.

I'm having a LAVH - on March 2. Will be in hospital till March 5

TAH? How long in Hosp?

Michele,
hey, just wanted to let you know that I had mine TAH/BSO last Thursday @ 2 p.m. and came home early Sun. morning. Would have been let go earlier, but I changed pain meds on Sat. night and they wanted to make sure I was OK.
Give you a quick hint if you would like, if they offer an epidural....take it!!! it is soo much better! less pain meds and you can still walk and turn in bed.
Good luck to you!

how long in hosp

I had a TAH/BSO and was told I'd be in the hospital for 2/3 nights, and since I felt good, they let me go home after just 2 nights and it was also New Years Day, so they were most likely happy to have one less patient :-) I'd plan on 3 and if things are going well, its always possible to go home in just 2, all depends on if you have an complications, I didn't have any and hopefully you won't either. They did ask if I was able to pass gas, before going home, so thank GOD it started, the gas pains were the worst part of the whole deal, lasts for a few days too after you get home.

Hopeing you have a good surgery and a quick recovery!

TAH? How long in Hosp?

Hi,
My surgery is for Feb. 26th, TAH/RSO, with bladder sling, too. I was told by the doctor 2 nights that I'd be in. When I questioned that, saying I was in 4 days with a c-section...thinking on the line that with the c-section it's the same cut, but not as involved and they're letting you in 4 days...why not 4 days for a hysterectomy which is so much more involved. The doctor told me that our lovely insurance companies feel that with a c-section, you need your rest because you will be taking care of a newborn and should be in 4 days, whereas to have a hysterectomy you are not doing anything but "lying around" and they think you can do that at home.
My gyn said if it were up to him he would make it that we do get to stay in longer and have a separate wing and have hotel-like rooms so that you can relax like at home, but be able to push a button for quick assistance. Sounds good. Don't think it will happen, though.
I feel fortunate that our major local hospital has opened a hospital all its own dedicated to women and women's health. This is strictly a women's hospital and patients go there for anything from having babies, to inpatient surgeries, to outpatient surgeries, mammograms, blood testing, etc. Most of our local ob/gyn's have their offices in that building as well. It's like a one-stop-shop place. It's great.
Well, have some things to do before I sit down to watch American Idol....I am so hooked on that show.
Take care, and good luck to you.
