How long can catheters stay in

Hi Hanna Wow this is a good question, have you asked your doctor about this? My only experience with a long term catheter was before surgery. I had one in for about a month because of urinary retention caused by a "pelvic mass" which thankfully turned out to be a very large fibroid. Doctors didn't seem to be concerned that I had had it for that long. Know it is no fun to have your "little buddy" hanging around. Sorry I can't be of more help. s

Hanna,
Has your doctor referred you to a urologist? I'd say at 3 months, you should be having some testing to figure out why the bladder hasn't relaxed and gotten back to normal. I left the castle with mine and kept it a week, which was enough for me! My gyn said anytime you do anything around the bladder, it can become aggrivated and refuse to do it's job. Letting it rest usually lets things get back to normal. Bladder retention is like inflating a balloon. When you deflate it, it's all wrinkled and soft and unable to go back to it's shape right away. At this point, I'd insist on a referral to a specialist and have some additional tests to see exactly what the problem is. Also, having the catherter in too long can actually irritate the urethra and cause it to spasm. Good Luck!

Yes it is true that they can stay indefinately, but do pose a route for bacteria and such which leaves you vulnerable to infection. I believe your biggest concern here is that you're not able to urinate as you should be.
