Hemorraged emergency hysterectomy

How common is this?

Just was curious. I never had any issues, not even an OB/ GYN (was regular with my annuals with family dr). Hemmoraged one Friday night, had 4 units transfused and they made the call on a hysterectomy before I bled out (crypts hit critical). No apparent reason for why it happened.

Did have issues with heavy menstual bleeding 2 mos. before the emergency. Was told by the dr. it was stress causing the issue and come back in 3 mos. RIGHT....

Best I can say was compared to what I've been reading, I had NO CLUE about all of this stuff. I had to call my operating dr. a week after surgery to ask if I even had a cervix anymore, I knew so little about what happened!

All the best to everyone else recovering. It's frustrating being slowed down....I'm 38...when will my abdomen "unswell"? When does that pressure down there go away?

Thanks!

Hemorraged emergency hysterectomy

you are in the right place for answers to your questions. welcome and we are glad not only that you found this site but that you are well in spite of your scary situation. there is so much information here it will keep you coming back again and again! as your health and symptoms improve you'll find new questions to ask. rest and relax this is your one opportunity to take care of yourself and heal properly.
i knew i was going to have a hyst but a month before my surgery i hemorraged and went in at midnight but luckily i had lurked around this site for a month and knew what to expect during and after. the swelly belly lasted uncomfortably without jeans for at least two months. i wore elastic waist pants during that time and had to but them as i had never worn them before. but you learn fast not to push wearing jeans or zippers because it will make your tummy swell even more. also if you do to much lifting/laundry/bending etc. you'll get swelly too.
rest and recover and we look forward to seeing you here often. good luck

welcome

I was in kind of the same situation but I was scheduled for a laproscopy and d&c and ended up with a hysterectomy. I was having alot of pain and bleeding for months before but I never expected the hysterectomy. But during surgery he couldnt control the bleeding and he left the operating room to tell my husband he was going to have to take it all. I am 28 so I was farely young for all of this to happen.. So all the information like you has come after the fact..
I hope your recovery is going ok?? Take it easy and rest as much as possible it will help with your recovery...
Keep us posted on how you are doing, Kris

Heavy bleeding

Nanook I feel for you. Just 4 weeks before my hysterectomy I was rushed to the emergency room by my husband because I couldn't control my bleeding and thought I would bleed to death!

Turns out that one of my fibroids had ruptured and part of it was protruding from my cervix. Thank Goodness that God was watching over me that night as the ER OB/GYN tried to "pull" the protruding pieces of the fibroid through my cervix. Said there was nothing to worry about. Didn't succeed so left me alone and when I got my current OB/GYN he said I was so lucky they didn't make me hemhorriage worse when they were playing with it.

He gave me a shot of Depo Lupron and I was fortunate that it stopped my bleeding and allowed my body to restore some of the lost iron, my hemocryt score was 29.1. Day before surgery I was able to get it back up to 36 and that helped my peace if mind.

Hugs to you girl and chin up. I find that I have a lot of things to look foreward now and just think, when your friends are complaining of cramps and bloating, you can smile and say, how does it feel again? I forgot.
