Me ....I took them about 3 weeks I think. BUT everyone's body is different. If your uncomfortable and your doc has okayed drugs for you...by all means take them.
I personally went off of them as soon as I could tolerate the discomfort (NOT PAIN) just because I was fearfull of addiction..but your doc should be monitoring that as well. If they say go for it...go for it.

when did you stop taking painkillers?

I had my surgery on 2-10. I was home 2-12 and was only taking advil. I completely quit taking advil by 2-14 and haven't touched them since!

Hi,

Everyone is different. If your are in so much pain that you need them take them. Especially, if the doc has okayed it. I will be post-op 3 weeks Friday and I am taking 2 ibuprofen a day. You and your doc need to be the one to judge your pain.

when did you stop taking painkillers?

I had a pretty ugly surgery that included rebuilding my bladder.
I took Percoset for 6 days (was so self-conscious, I wrote down when I took them, so I wouldn't repeat the dose, since they made me goofy), and Darvocet for 9 days after that.

Since I could barely sit down, but needed to sit up, they were a
necessity. The pain was still pretty bad, so I would consciously increase the hours between Darvocet pills until I was off them. It's not addictive. Ibuprofen helped. Advil didn't help me.
I did use more Darvocet for traveling in a car at 4 weeks; couldn't have made the trip without it.

It all worked out fine. Pretty amazing for someone like me who doesn't even like to take aspirin. As someone already mentioned, the doctor got it thru my head that if I didn't manage my pain, I could slow my recovery, not be as mobile, and encourage infection (people who don't move around get respiratory infections alot easier, UTI's, etc.). I hope you have a great recovery!

when did you stop taking painkillers?

My DD prescribed tylenol 3 with codine and motrin 800. I took both (he said I could) for the first three days after surgery because I didn't want to be in any pain (and I wasn't). Day four and five, I only took pain meds as needed which turned out to be once and that was first thing in the morning and I took pain meds at night before bed. Day six I did not take any pain meds for the day, just at night. Today is day seven. I had to go for my 1 week post op so I took 1 motrin 800 before appt. because I didn't know how much poking and prodding my DD was going to do and I didn't want to be in pain after. I feel great so far. He even released me to drive as long as I have not taken any pain meds. Just remember that everyone of us is as different as is each of our surgeries. Zero or little pain is so important for proper healing. I sure hope your pain subsides soon. I will keep you in my prayers.

when did you stop taking painkillers?

I came home day two after surgery, they gave me percacet that day, I continued for three days, taking the percacet every four hours, then switched to vicadin 750mg for three days, then to 500mg vicadin. By the time I hit my two week mark I was taking motrin. I came back to my no stress job at two 1/2 weeks and started back on vicadin. I would wean myself off, then overdo and have to take it for a couple of days. I am at 5 1/2 weeks and now off of vicadin. So don't worry about how long, take what you need to cut the pain. I have learned from my fibromyalsia that if you get too deep into pain that it is harder to get rid of. Take control while you can.
good luck, brdesertrose.
