yogurt advice from a "veteran"

I'm usually on the post-op site, but I wanted to pop over and pass along what I think is useful advice.

I'm seeing many posts over there about UTIs, yeast infections, diarrhea and/or constipation, etc. from taking antibiotics. I've been feeling very blessed not to have those complications, but my DM suggested a practical reason: I eat yogurt. I've read many sources that suggest that eating yogurt is good for preventing all these things, but it never occurred to me that I was helping to prevent post-surgical problems until she reminded me.

Plus, if you're past a certain age and/or your ovaries will be removed, too, you'll need extra calcium to avoid osteoporosis. Yogurt is richer in calcium than milk.

So my advice is to incorporate yogurt into your diet if you don't eat it already. Seems like a rather enjoyable way to prevent infections, and it's easy to digest during those first weeks when your appetite will be a little finicky. (But don't eat so much yogurt that you have no room left for a little chocolate! It is medicinal!)

I'm talking about fat-free, fruit-flavored yogurt. I use the house brand of my supermarket, comparable to commercial brands like Yoplait, Dannon, etc. As long as it contains live (or active) cultures, it will help. I think frozen yogurt (like ice cream) doesn't have the active cultures. You might also use plain and add fruit, sweetener, etc. if the taste is a problem. It would be for me!

I also should add that I received antibiotics in my IV and also had a huge hypodermic in the hip the day before I came home, so I did have antibiotics which could have caused those other complications.

I have noticed ever since my surgery that my body just seems to crave yogurt. I have been eating it every day. I especially love the Yoplait custard style. It is definitely a wonderful way to get the calcium that our bodies need.

I swear by it. The less sugar the better and lots of water.

Well sisters - over here in Australia I think we must have the biggest choice of yoghurts ever - so its not hard to find one you like - personally, I never drink milk (yuk), so when I have my cereal I have it with heaps of yoghurt spooned over the top and also eat some yoghurt every day - I must say looking back, I haven't had any recurring problems with antibiotics and maybe that's why - anyway healthy living sisters - love Sharon
