Lena,

I am so glad you posted this. I have 1 ovary but still have a lot of questions in regards to HRT. I hope I am permitted to say this, I saw Suzanne Somers on Larry King and can not wait to get her new book called "The Sezy Years". I believe it goes in to detail about research with bio-identical hormones. It sounds interesting and enlightful. In the area in which I live, we are somewhat "behind the times" and very conservative. I plan on reading/researching everything I can. Best of luck to you.

I too has a TAH/BSO on 1-22-04 I did not have a hot flash until about a week later. The doctor prescribed Premarin however I told him how I felf about taking them after hearing so much on the news about hrt. He suggested that I try them for 3 mths. I still have not started them. My grandmother had breast cancer and my aunt also. I know that aunt had onlytaken hrt for 6 months before breast cancer. If I was you I would talk with dr to see what is best for you. I was told by my primary doctor that if hrt is for the syptoms of night sweats and hot flahes there is something else that primary could prescribed It is for mood disorder. (crying etc.) I am get dr to do that since last few days I have noticed crying and lonelyfeeling. Also controlling whenit comes to myhusband
Let me know what happens with you

no hrt

From everything I've been reading, HRT can be used by "some" women to deal with the most disturbing of the symptoms of menapause, but shouldn't be used for long periods of time. If your symptoms are doable, then do without. There are things that can help ease some of these symptoms if needed, like black cohash, soy, some creams etc. Some women will not have any problems. I think what the other poster was referring to about the mood med was effexor. That may be all you need. These menopausal symptoms do end. I just rode it out.

if you do need HRT look for a compounded pharmacy by you. You say your area is conservative but that doesnt mean there wont be one in your area. If I can find on e in the valley that I live in that has less than 50,000 people total youshould be able to find one. I spoke to him today and he is great. Im going to wait a couple months before i make the change over to compounded but he will make it as a tablet, a cream or other formats. He was great to talk to...and it doesnt cost any more than the regular HRT(this was a concern because my insurance doesnt cover rx...).

If you've had endo, I've read & heard that you're not supposed to use Black Cohosh or Soy.

Do some research and talk with your dr. He/She will know your personal history and should be able to work out a plan that's best for you.

Good luck.

Lena...I also had endo on my colon and a LAVH. I am having no problems with symptoms, and have opted for no HRT due to the endo. I do take a multivitamin, Vitamin E and C for heart health, and calcium with vitamin D for my bones. Walking and lifting light weights are good for your upper body as well. I did have a bone scan and will continue every 2 years to monitor that as well. I know that I am blessed in that the menapausal symptoms are barely there....I hope that you will have similar success...write those ?? down for the doctors and ASK. ASK, ASK...good luck.

my doc is not really into pill pushing for hrt unless i twist his arm.
now i am 3 weeks post op,,and really no symptoms of surgical meno,,if i am,,its really not a big deal to me,,so that being said,i either will do bioidenticals,,if those r safe,,but i am taking vit e,c,d
and chewables calciums. the doc even suggested that i might not need to do anything,,cept for a bone density test. but i was wondering,,will i shrivel up and wither away if i dont take any of this stuff?,,is it like a mandetory thing for menopausal woman?
will the hormone police come and take me away if i dont need it? lol...i mean,,sorry for the ignorance,,but ,,i was just wondering,,if i will actually need any of this? thanks for all your help

Hi Lena...I am glad that you aren't experiencing too many symptoms. My docs said that if I hadn't experienced symptoms by a week after surgery, I probably wouldn't have much problem.

My answer to your ?? about do I really need to take anything? I would say for your general health...heart health, bone health, etc. popping a few vitamins each morning and calcium after lunch and dinner is a safeguard for you. Also get into some exercise program.

As far as any other symptoms go, I am going to treat them as they arise. So far, so good. Good luck with your decisions...

surgical menopause

There are other effects of not having hormones for some women other than the well-known hot flashes & night sweats such as vaginal tissue atrophy, skin sensations, & gum deterioration. Just FYI, check out the website "The survivor's guide to surgical menopause" (sorry--I haven't figured out how to insert a link into these posts yet! ) Just type it into your search box & it should come up. It helps to have all the info you can get!
