bowel prep....hmmmm

Ok, in several threads I have noticed alot of you sisters refering to bowel prep

I was just wondering, if everyone usualy goes through that due to surgery and working so closley around the bowels? or what?

Just wondering!

Thanks all!

bowel prep....hmmmm

Dear Marni,

Bowel prep is a good thing

My doc did not require any... in hindsight (sorry for the pun), it woulda been to my advantage to be able to postpone that first post-op (wow, was I nervous!) BM a little longer.

Just my own experience,

bowel prep....hmmmm

I had no bowel prep. I ate regular diet up until midnight the night before surgery. I came home used a laxative and colace (for stool softening) and it took 5 days but everything came out just fine.

bowel prep....hmmmm

My doctor did not require any bowel prep for my TAH, but I voluntarily chose not to eat anything solid for the entire day before my surgery. I really didn't want to deal with any straining or anything! Most doctors do require bowel prep, because your bowels really need to be empty when they're "messing around" in there!

bowel prep....hmmmm

Hi
Im scheduled for a LSH on Dec 20th. Spoke to my doc today about this subject and he reccomended I switch to a clear liquid diet on mon for surgery on wed. then a lax on tue night at home. I am an almost vegan (no meat no milk) so maybe that is enough for me but ask you dr . Good Luck.

Reasons for the bowel prep...

Many doctors requier bowel preps because of the area that they are working in is so close to the intestines and if they nick it when it is full they would contaminate your entier abd. The other reasons include help prevent distention after the surgery and making the first BM easier.

If your doctor does not requier one I would still do my own at home which could be as easy as liquid diet the day before and 3 laxatives the nite before.

Hugs

No special diet, no bowel prep, no problems.

But it's the doc's call.
