cipro long term

Anita,
I took cipro for about six weeks during the anthrax scare here in South Florida, as did dd and dh (dh worked with the first victim). The biggest complaint we had was that it seemed to supress our immune systems, and we were extremely vulnerable to very virus that came down the pike for months afterward.
Also, even though I had previously rarely gotten any kind of infection, I developed a massive staph infection after my tah/bso that required two weeks of intravenous antibiotics. That was in June of '03. Then on January 1st '04 I developed hemmorhagic conjunctivitis, and I'm convinced it was again related.
Of course this is all just speculation, and can't be in any way construed as medical advice.
Good luck,

Emily in Florida

Cipro - anyone on it longterm ? Side effects?

Hi (((Anita))) What kind of "long term" are we talking about? I was on Cipro for 30 days straight once, to treat diverticulitis that wouldn't go away. It eventually worked. I was taking Flagyl at the same time, so if I'd had major side effects (I didn't), I wouldn't have known which drug to blame. The major problem I had with Cipro is the dietary and supplemental restrictions. No Calcium within x hours before or y hours after taking it, and I had to take it twice a day... and I was on a soft bland diet at the same time (imagine soft bland diet with no dairy products - doesn't leave many choices). I would also worry, if you were on it longer term and following the no calcium restriction carefully, that bone density could be affected, especially in women not on HRT.

Let us know how you've been when you get a chance, OK?

s,
-Linda
