Anyone have sleep apnea?

I was diagnosed a few months ago with OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) and use a CPAP. Does anyone else use one? Did you take your CPAP to the hospital? Did your OSA cause any problems with anesthesia? I forgot to mention my OSA to my GYN when I saw him for the other complaints, and I'm not sure if I need to make special arrangements for the use of CPAP in the hospital.

Thanks for your help!!!

Anyone have sleep apnea?

Hi Christie,
My husband had undiagnosed sleep apnea. Last year he had surgery for a broken hip and the combination of anesthesia and pain meds made his breathing so shallow he coded and had to be tubed and put in ICU. I'm NOT trying to frighten you....just please mention your apnea to your Dr. so they can take the necessary precautions.

If hubby would have known about the apnea the problems never would have occured. You will be just fine since you are aware you have it....please,please make sure that the hospital knows too.

Hugs,
Michelle

Anyone have sleep apnea?

Guess I should have added that the shallow breathing was due to his sleep apnea... while sleeping he stopped breathing for a second and that was when he coded.

Anyone have sleep apnea?

Thanks Michelle! I thought I had heard that anesthesia could cause problems with OSA. The last time I was hosptalized I was awake (but drugged) during my procedure and the OSA wasn't a problem. That was before I was diagnosed with OSA.

I think I have called my Dr 3 times a week for the past two weeks. His staff is going to start rolling their eyes when I call, lol.

Thanks again for your help!

sleep apnea

Hi Christie Lee

I am scheduled for my tah/bso on the 5th of May. I, too, have sleep apnea and use a cpap at night. I was told that you should make your dr. aware of your condition, so that they can watch you more carefully. In my paperwork that I received with my machine, it stated that if you go into hospital, to take your machine with you, but I was also told that you should not have to take your own machine, just make sure that the hospital knows that you are on a cpap and they will supply you with the necessary equipment while there. If that is the case be sure that you know what your machine is set on (mine is at 8) so that you get the appropriate amount of air pressure needed to control your sleep apnea. In any case I would talk to the hospital admissions and find out their procedures on this. That is what I intend to do also be sure to let the "sleep Dr." hehe, can't spell the proper name, just in case he needs to make any adjustments on his end as well.

Good luck on your upcoming Castle visit! Feel free to pm me any time.

Anyone have sleep apnea?

I have slight sleep apnea. I was tested and was borderline for needing a CPAP machine. The hospital asked me because they need to know if you need to have it in your room, etc.
