Oral Thrush

I am six days post-op and my doctor put me on an antibotic. My tongue has become very sore and my friend looked at it and told me it was oral thrush. Is this dangerous? How can it be treated?

Oral Thrush

I don't know if it's dangerous but it's not fun. Fortunately it's also easy to fix.

I was put on Nystatin, a not-unpleasant liquid medicine, to swish and swallow three times a day. I also started using a (more unpleasant) teatree oil mouthwash about the same time, which may or may not have contributed to the cure. It cleared up fast. The teatree oil moutwash is probably the reason my abscessed tooth is also clearing up. I can't afford a root canal right now, and I am positive that I can't afford to replace the crown if it breaks when they drill through it to do the root canal.

I've been on antibiotics for MONTHS and this was my second outbreak of thrush. The first time I was put on pills which I needed to take only for three days, and it cleared right up then too.

Hope this helps.

Oral Thrush

I had a BAD case of it right after my 2.5 weeks of antibiotics post op. I stopped eating anything with sugars in it as much as possible, and take two acidophilus (live culture) capsules daily, along with either drinking acidophilus milk or a serving of yogurt with live cultures. It's worked wonders, and my tongue is once again pink. I still have to watch out for the sugars, but I should be doing that anway. SO...there's a natural way to deal with it.

Oral Thrush

This is going to sound crazy, but here goes... When my oldest son was a couple of months old, he got all these white patches in his mouth. I called the Dr. and he said it was thrush. He told me to buy liquid Lotrimin that you get for athletes foot. Put a very small amount on a qtip and swab his mouth. It was GONE in a day. Just make sure it's the liquid, and you would want to just a very small amount...and yes it tastes quite horrid. Hope it gets better....it must be very, very uncomfortable.

It's the same active ingredient, but BLEAH! BLEAH! BLEAH!

...let's hear it for the pleasant-tasting prescription liquid!
