No overnight stay with TAH-BSO?

I just made my preop appts for the TAH-BSO I am having on 6-25. The admissions department at the hospital informed me that I would be going home the same day. I knew my HMO would send me home ASAP but I thought I would need to stay at least one night. The HMO even approved a real hospital instead of a day surgery center. Has anyone else gone home the same day?

My family has been accusing me of being a drama queen all along and this is just reinforcing their opinions. I am now in the dog house basement because I wouldn't agree to buy a new house and move this summer or go on a big family vacation to the beach the week after surgery. Maybe I am just being a big baby.

You are not being a big baby at all. I'd be freaking out!!!

First of all, I think it is absolutely ridiculous that they expect you to go home the same day as a TAH. Hon, that just isn't feasible!!! I think you should call and verify that with the pre-op nurse or your doc. If that is truly the case, then RUN, don't walk, but RUN....to another doctor. No truly diligent doc would discharge a patient the same day as major abdominal surgery!!!

I don't think you're being a drama queen at all. This is a huge major operation you're having here. It is a slow and long recovery period of 6-8 weeks for initial recovery. EEEEK....I think you need to educate some people. Why not print off some of the pre-op articles from this site (such as the FAQ for families) and show them to people. I did this for my dh, and I think he has a much better appreciation of what to expect now.

Much love
Tam

No overnight stay with TAH-BSO?

That's incredible! I had a TAH/BSO with bladder repairs on May 18th. I was in no shape to even get out of bed much less go home. I think some one has made a mistake. This is MAJOR surgery for crying out loud! I would call the doctor on this. Good Luck to you and blessings,

No overnight stay with TAH-BSO?

Kelly---my stay at the castle for my TAH/BSO is supposed to be 36 - 48 hours AFTER the day of surgery! That just doesn't sound right---you definitely need to get in touch w/your dr and/or hospital---sounds like someone made a mistake. My HMO just had a hysterectomy class, and one of the ladies there was also scheduled as an outpatient, and the nurse who hosted the class, said that was definitely a mistake, and she needed to get that changed ASAP.

Good luck honey, and you are not being a drama queen. This is MAJOR surgery! I hope you can get your family to understand that.

I don't think you're being a "drama queen" at all!

Dear Kelly,

It's unimaginable to me that they're planning on sending you home the same day as your surgery. (These HMO's are playing havoc with us!) I had a TAH BSO about 1 1/2 years ago and was in the hospital for 4 days. (I had some complications with being able to urinate following surgery.) Anyway, I was glad they didn't shove me out the door any sooner. I wouldn't have been ready. This is major surgery!

All my friends who had gone through a hysterectomy told me not to push it....that it would take at least 6 to 8 weeks to get back to "somewhat normal".....and they were right. I think you're wise to not try to plan too much too soon. You need to take care of yourself, even if those around you don't understand.

Good luck with your surgery! By the way, mine too was because of heavy bleeding, huge clots, abdominal pain. I had fibroids, but no endo. I feel so much better after having the surgery. I'm sure you will too. Hang in there. I'll keep you in my prayers!

No overnight stay with TAH-BSO?

Thanks everybody. I did call my Dr.'s office before I posted and the nurse said that is what he put in the orders. I asked her if that was standard and she danced around the question. My Dr. is on vacation until the week of my surgery so I guess I will just pray it is a mistake and talk to him about it at the preop.

My family will not be reasonable. Hysterectomy is the norm for females in my family. Most have them at age 40 (every one is amazed I made it to the ripe old age of 42). You would think the female members of my family would be more compassionate but I just keep being told about the aunt that met her Dr. in Walmart the next day and the aunt that mowed the lawn the next day (I only have 9 aunts!). My own mother is my worst critic and I remember her surgery vividly - she did NOT recover well. I am also the first to have to have an abdominal incision. I did print out the faq sheet for my DH and he isn't buying any of it. His SIL apparently had an abdominal incision and told him the surgery was no big deal. It doesn't help that I bounced back from a c-section with no problems almost 8 years ago, but I had no choice there. My PIL's were here and I did not trust them anywhere near my baby.

I don't have the time to find another doctor. I am a teacher and I have to report back on Aug 10. There is no time to find a new doctor, go through all the tests, play all games about the disappearing/reappearing fibroids and get the surgery in with any recovery time. I just can't go through another year of wear blood soaked black pants and being afraid to sit or brush against anything for fear of leaving red marks.

Oh well, such is life. Some how I will get through this. And at this point, I really don't care if I don't .

No overnight stay with TAH-BSO?

I think that with the insurance company, you can stay as long as needed as long as it's deemed "medically necessary". I would just tell your doc that you are simply not ready and let him battle it out with them, filling out the paperwork stuff. Call the doc though and let them know you think this is NUTS.

Best of luck and keep us posted. It's pretty scary..

No overnight stay with TAH-BSO?

I had a LOR with lrg cyst removed 3 years ago. I had about an 8 inch incision across the bikini line and because I hate hospitals, I talked my Dr into letting me go home that night. Let me tell you, it was the worst mistake I have ever made. After my 10 minute ride home, I vomited (sorry!) the rest of the night. Despite taking the pain meds, I was in severe pain. Point being, this is a very serious operation and to think you do not need to be in the hospital is crazy. I have a TAH on 6/25 and I plan to stay as long as my insurance and Dr will allow. Lesson learned. Beleive me, you are NOT acting like a baby!!! I would try to talk to the Dr about your concerns in being released too soon. Good luck - I hope every thing goes well for you.
