Large Mass
Hi, Sisters!
I have a question the I hope some of you can give me some insight on. I am trying to find out some information for a friend of my sister-in-law who has just been told that she has to have a hyst due to a large mass that was discovered in her pelvic area. Her gyn has told her that there is a "non life-threatening mass" that is attached to her kidney, bladder, uterus, ovary and colon.
It was just recently discovered even though she has been having pain (now severe) for the past 16 years!! All of the doctors that she went to (men, of course) told her that she should take ibuprofen and live with it. They put it down to her complaining overly-much about her "female time". (Makes you want to puke, doesn't it???!!!) Well, she finally put her foot down, and her family physician had an MRI and colonoscopy done. THey showed nothing. When she finally went to a new gyn, the doctor said that SHE would do a scope with the light (whatever that is), but that she didn't expect to find anything because there usually isn't anything to be found. Low and behold, she found this mass. She has told the woman that she has never seen one so large, and has no idea what it is, but that she needs to have the hyst and have all but the right ovary taken out. She wants to leave the right ovary so that she still has some estrogen production.
My sister-in-law told her about "my" website that I go to and gave her the Hystersisters.com info. The woman has no computer, so my sister-in-law had her call me. She has asked me to come to my fellow sisters to see if anyone has ever had anything like this before, and what they did. So, here I am.
Naturally, she is beside herself with worry since she has no idea what's going on. So, if any of you can possibly shed any light on this, please either reply here or send me an e-mail directly. My info is given in my profile.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Large Mass
LouiseD,
My father-in-law had a similar situation last summer. They discovered a large non-cancerous mass next to his gall bladder. They operated and removed the mass and he is doing okay.
It sounds like a similar thing but in a different area of the body.
I might suggest your SIL's friend get a 2nd or even a 3rd gyneo opinion now that something has been diagnosed. It would never hurt to gather more information.
Good Luck!!

Large Mass
Louise,
I have a fibroid that is causing me no pain or anything else. But because it has been growing and I am a breast cancer survivor, the doctors I've seen-- all men-- have been very quick to suggest a total hysterectomy, "just in case" it might turn out to cancerous...
I dont' have any real light to shed on your friend's situation, but i guess I'm trying to say that there are all spectrums: your friend has been having severe pain for years and they told her just to take ibuprofen, no surgery recommended or even any imaging tests until she insisted; whereas I have no pain or any symptoms at all, and they immediately wanted me to do "one stop shopping" surgery on my entire reproductive system...
