Length of hospital stay?

Hi Ladies,

I'm just curious, I am scheduled for a SAH at 1:00 pm on July 19th. My Dr. says that I will be going home by Wednesday. That's two days (or just under 48 hours depending on the time of discharge) When having a c-section women around here stay for 3 days. Why is there a longer hospital stay for c-sections than for abdominal hysterectomies when the surgeries are so similar? If anything, I would think that there would be more cutting and stitching internally with the SAH. I understand that with a c-section you also have a newborn to care for. But I have 3 children at home, the youngest being 16 months old. Thankfully I have plenty of support from both sets of grandparents and my DH. But what about the women without that support at hom?

Maybe I will be feeling better than I am anticipating but I'm not sure I will be ready to head home in less than 48 hours.

Thanks for the input!

Length of Stay

Hi
I had my tah on July 2nd at 10am and left the hospital on July 5th at 10am which was just about right for me. They were talking about releasing me on Sunday July 4th but I knew I wasn't ready. They would not consider letting me leave before I had passed gas and was moving around and showering on my own. The extra day made a big difference in how I was feeling. I hope they give you the extra time if you need it. I think it's an individual thing and you have to listen to your body.
Good luck!

Length of hospital stay?

I stayed 3 days for a TAH and BSO. I think you can play it by ear with your Doc. If you don't feel up to going home so fast tell him or her.

I liked it at home better because it was quieter. Just be sure you have somebody to wait on you at first or at least have food prepared. Avoid the stairs and go slowly--you can only recover once. Let everything heal and avoid adhesions.

Length of hospital stay?

I didn't have an abdominal hyst, but I did have a LAVH removing everything but the right ovary. I left the very next day, and it was too soon... I had an allergic reaction to meds, got severly dehydrated, and ended up back in the very next day. Stayed for two more days. Your body will tell you when you are ready, and listen to it. The docs usually listen to what you say and do what makes you most comforatable. I wish you luck, and will be thinking of you! Diana

Length of hospital stay?

I had a SAH at 11am on June 29 and was home around 3pm on July 1 (just over 48 hours later). I didn't expect I'd be going home that soon. I think they actually let me hang around a few extra hours (they were going to send me home in the morning), except that the last time I was hospitalized, I got booted out too soon (had to be rehospitalized for three days); so this time they said I could wait until I felt I was really ready.
