Ovarian cyst

I was told today that I have a complex cystic mass on my right ovary with a septation which is prone to cancer. I have had my Uterus removed 2 years ago but kept my ovaries because I did not want to take HRT. My OBGYN recommended to have my ovaries removed and start HRT. He stated that hormone therapy is safe and since I am 45 years old that the effects of not taking hormones after the removal of my ovaries would be that I would age quickly, be very moody and have an excessive dry vagina. I have always heard bad about taking HRT, but I also don't want to age before my time. He said HRT is safe to take for as long as needed. Any suggestions.

Hi Saija,

to Hyster Sisters. I moved your post from the hysterectomy pre-op forum to this forum (The Hormone Jungle Message Forum), where I feel that you'll receive more information and better support.

While you're waiting for a response to your questions about HRT, I'd like to suggest that you read some of the Hormone Jungle Articles discussing HRT.

I'm glad that you found us and I hope you'll continue to read and to post any other questions you may have.

He won't keep you on it too long, probably. I think the average age to stop is around 50, so 5 years is not a long time to be on HRT, if you are worried about it. Also, you could probably stop at any time, since your doctor would be willing to prescribe it, but it would be your choice to take it. Keep in mind you are currently "on estrogen" since your ovaries are making it right now. So, you have the "risks" of estrogen right now. The excessive risk everyone I think is talking about is for post-menopausal women (after the age of natural menopause). Also, the risk, I think, is somewhat cumulative. If you haven't taken external estrogen in the past for very long (e.g., the pill), then I think that's possibly a favorable factor too. Good luck w/your decision.
