operating report says "bilateral ovaries were noted to be atrophic"

Hi everyone,

I finally got the transcribed operating report (my surgery was 5/19). Surprisingly the report does not mention the adenomyosis, which my doctor told me I had in the post-op visit. I am scheduled to see her soon and will ask her about that.

But my question to all of you is -- what does this mean?

"bilateral ovaries were noted to be atrophic"

I am still ovulating and do not have menopausal symptoms.

Thanks for any insights.

atrophic means that they were decreased in size. bi-lateral usually means two, so I would say/guess both. I'm not a doctor, I work in a pharmacy. If you type medical dictionary into your search engine on your computer, there are several available for free. Hope this helps, but always ask your doctor!

Hi Iphie,

The adenomyosis cannot be confirmed until it is sent to pathology so it would not be in the operating report but would be in the pathology report.

operating report says "bilateral ovaries were noted to be atrophic"

Dawn,

Thanks for your insight. I opted for a myomectomy though not realizing I had adeno too. My doctor told me after the operation that I had adeno...I don't know how she would know this if a pathology report is needed. I am meeting with her on Tuesday.

Looks like the myomectomy may have been a poor decision. I had my first period since the surgery and it was just as bad as before despite the fibroid being gone.

Bummer.

Hi.

Trinity is right...if your ovaries were atrophied, that means they had shrunk from a larger size. "Bilateral" just means both.
