Craving Ice

All of you have been just wonderful to answer questions and offer suggestions. Please give me input on one more thing.

I'm curious as to whether anyone else craved ice before their surgery. Before I had my hysterectomy, I ate ice by the cup full all day long. This went on for probably two years and nearly drove my family crazy. And I simply could not control it. After the surgery, it's like someone turned off the switch. I don't even think about ice now. Am I just weird? My doctor acted like I was crazy when I told him about it.

Craving Ice

I was the same way. I craved crushed ice for the past few years. I would even beg my hubby to drive 20 miles one way to a fast food place that had crushed ice! LOL Talk about driving your family nuts!

Same here about flipping a switch off. I went to that same fast food place and ordered my usual....extra large coke with extra, extra ice....and didn't even eat the ice. My family thought I had lost my mind to let all that good ice go to waste!

I've read on here that craving crushed ice is a sign of anemia. That would explain alot, although I've never asked my doc about it.

Craving Ice

Hi:

I just recently read an article in a magazine that craving ice might have something to do with Iron or Folic Acid defiencies. You might try on the web.

Craving Ice

Hi
Me too, I can clean out the ice machine in the refidge before the hyst.
It is called "pica" some women take to eating dirt also, a mineral diffenciacy due to severe anemina,

I have almost stopped the ice, now I think it is more habit then a "gotta have it now or hurt someone" craving.
are your iron levels low?

good luck, ask about iron rich foods or gental iron tablets.

Craving Ice

Me too! Me too!

I craved ice for a couple of years - had no idea it had to do with iron deficiency until I found this site. I was about --><-- that far from having to have a transfusion right before surgery. Had I not doubled up on the iron pills (yikes! constipation here we go!) I would have really been sunk at Castle time.

However, once I got past the dry mouth, about post-op day 2... I have had no urge to drive to Sonic to order a large cup of ice. (It's only about a mile from my house and would be easy to stop there on the way home from work.)

I also know from a post-op blood count that I'm not anemic anymore.

Back during my last pregnancy (19+years ago) I didn't crave ice but I was strangely drawn to the smell of clay. I never had an urge to put it in my mouth, but I certainly did breathe deep when I was out spreading (CLEAN!!!) kitty litter - made from clay - on the front walk during snow/ice storms. I've also heard of women craving laundry starch from pica, too.

Isn't it funny how our bodies can tell us something is wrong, if we only will learn to listen?!

Craving Ice

LOL...Sonic is about 1/2 mile from my house and I used to send DBF there all the time. They sell it by the bag, I could go through 2 or 3 a week. But since surgery I haven't craved it. I was severly anemic before. Doc even sent me to blood specialist, they thought I had lukemia. Thank God it was just anemia caused from my HEAVY periods. I had to take 325 mg of iron 3 times a day and folic acid. Now I'm down to 1 a day. Hopefully next visit she will say I don't have to take them anymore.

Craving Ice

Hi ladies,
I have no idea what sonic fast food is but so sorry I missed it durning the ice craving years!!

I just thought I would mention another condition I had no idea was caused from anemia ( I too almost had the castle cancelled thank goodness I got a transfusion after) any way, twice now I have had a minor throat surgery, my thoat closed up just below the adams apple point, it would close to the point yogurt could not pass, I did the ice cream diet forever...stopped breathing several times any way the second surgery the doc told me it was a rare condition from anemia, called "plumner vison"...it came with a terrible sore troat I grew something like a strainer in the throat, which is why I am thinking of it have one today, (sore throat, sure it is from the below sixty degrees they keep it at work.
anyway I had no idea that anemia could cause more then fatigue...to close the throat!! Your right too bad we don't listen to our bodies more!!!
have a nice weekend...sorry about the rambling and stubbling here I am so tierd!!
goodnight

Craving Ice

My OB regularly asked patients if they craved ice, to see if he needed to check their crit. I was anemic before, during and after pregancies. I have noticed its nice, but is not the same. I agree with the earlier post, (Mary) it is just a habit. IT used to be get it now!!!!

Sonic Fast food is a drive in hamburger joint. If you don't have one, I am very sorry for your loss!
