Going in for pre-op physical tomorrow
Am trying to learn my way around this site, having just discovered it. I know this is short notice, but I am seeing my doctor tomorrow (Monday) for a pre-op physical before my hysterectomy which is scheduled for August 10. I am 55 and have been in menopause for over 3 years. I am still struggling with whether or not to have the ovaries removed. I will definitely be questioning my doctor tomorrow. However, in case anyone has comments, I'd be interested to know whether the ovaries can continue to function without the uterus. Or do they eventually shrivel and die without connection to the uterus? Does anyone have other questions I should be asking? I'm having the surgery because of fibroids (one, cantaloupe size and the other grapefruit size) that I was hoping would shrink once I entered menopause. That hasn't happened. What are people's experiences with scarring, urinary incontinence, bowel problems? My main reason for having this is because of the need to urinate all the time (and of course, a protruding belly that embarrasses). However, there has never been a bleeding or pain problem. Would welcome comments. Thanks, guys! -- Ruth

Hi again, Ruth!
Here's a list from the Pre-Op Hints that should give you a good start. Others can chime in with more they have thought of.

Ah, yes, the protruding belly. Even though I'm rather large, I am really bothered by the fact that I can't "suck it in" at all. When I found out how large my uterus is (16x10x7 cm) -- then it finally dawned on me -- no wonder!!!
I also have the urge to pee all the time. It has gotten to the point that my urinary problems are almost as bothersome as the bleeding and pain.
To answer your main question, the ovaries can and do continue to function even if the uterus is removed. They secrete hormones up to and after menopause. Unless they are diseased, or unless there's a history of ovarian cancer in your family, I would personally see if it is possible to keep them. At least that's my opinion.
Best of luck, and welcome to the "sisterhood"!!

Thank you for responding!
Hi April and MJD,
Just got back from the doctor today. It's all set. I'll be keeping the cervix and ovaries (unless something unexpected should occur). Thank you so much for your good thoughts and encouragement. Now that the countdown is beginning, I'll be needing all the support I can get. If you have any suggestions for how to prepare or what to expect, please let me know. Please stay in touch. -- Ruth
