Progesterone and hair regrowth?
Has anyone had success with hair loss being reversed by adding progesterone to the mix? I'm thinking after reading this website for the last two years, that there might be something to it. It seams that the sisters on combined hrt don't complain about this problem. Any thought's sisters? Thanks !

Progesterone and hair regrowth?
I haven't exactly had a hair loss problem... but having very long hair, I am kind of obsessed with trying to keep it healthy. I use Shen Min Activator, which is a liquid that's applied to the scalp a couple of times a day. Amazingly enough, it contains a small amount of progesterone.
I guess what I'm saying is, it's an idea that might be worth trying; at least there is some precedent for it if they've decided to include it in their product.

Progesterone and hair regrowth?
Sandie,
Does your doctor think the hair loss is due to hormones? An imbalance can cause problems. I had alot of problems after the hyst, mine was due to the effects of the surgery and, I think, the drastic loss of hormones. I take Evening Primrose Oil and Fish Oil and use a vitamin enriched shampoo.
Since I started that routine and found hormonal balance I haven't had any further problems with my hair. I use bi-est and a 5% compounded progesterone cream. Have also used a 2% compounded testosterone cream, but I'm still a bit sporadic with using it.

Progesterone and hair regrowth?
Hi Kim M,
I too am suffering from incredible hair loss. I have only been on estrace since my TAH/BSO in 1996. Since recently coming across this incredible site, I have discovered that progesterone is used even without a uterus. I was wondering if you started on progesterone right after your hyst. I am also now interested in bio-identical hormones, but don't know how to get my HMO to work with that.
I just thought I would say hi & get some ideas from your knowledge.
Thanks,
Barb

Progesterone and hair regrowth?
I was only on estrogen since my total hysterectomy. I always felt this hair loss was due to a loss of some hormone. I just started on Provera, after having a bad 1 day experience on Prometrium. It was too much too soon. I would however like to go back to it once my body gets used to having progesterone again, since it is supposed to be identical to the progesterone my body used to produce

Estrace is a bio-identical. There are many bio-identicals available with a prescription from a regular pharmacy. Compounded hormones from a compounding pharmacy are another way to get bio-identicals. Here's a link to an article about Bio-Identical Estrogens.
You would have to contact someone with your HMO to find out if compounded prescriptions are a benefit of your plan and if the doctors are willing to prescribe the compounds. Some cover it, others do not. <shrug>

Thanks April Dawn,
I had no idea. From what I have read so far on this forum, it seems that compounding hormones work better. Is there an article describing that as well?
Thanks,
 Barb

Progesterone and hair regrowth?
Hi Sandiec,
How long after your surgery did you experience hair loss? Did you have your thyroid checked? Which one
is closest to the progesterone identical to what the body produces, the Provera or Prometrium ?
Thanks,
Barb

Progesterone and hair regrowth?
I have experienced the hair loss for a couple of years now. It has subsided quite a bit, however, I have not seen it growing back. My hair got really thick after I had my children 20 some years ago, and stayed very thick. It wasn't until after the hysterectomy that it started thinning out. I have not been on progesterone until just last week, and I believe it is that hormone while you are pregnant that sparks the tremendous hair growth. I'll keep you posted. In answer to your other question I am taking the Provera for now but look forward to swithing to Prometrium because it is supposed to be the more natural one.
