High risk for breast cancer/ HRT?

I have a question. I am 37 and getting a hysterectomy on August 30th. I with I could keep my ovaries but I have always had problems with cysts and now they are hemorragic and not going away. Doctor states that they will need to go also. I will be put on HRT but I am reading that if you have a high risk of breast cancer that you are not a good candidate to take them. My Dr states that a test was done on women taken HRT estrogen only and it was proven that it did not increase the chance of breast cancer so even though I have 6 cases of breast cancer in my family, that I would be fine to take HRT. Is this incorrect?

Concerned,
Please respond any advice or knowlege in this area
Thanks
Lisa

Scheduled for Hysterectomy with both ovaries being removed.
on August 30th

High risk for breast cancer/ HRT?

Auntem,

I don't have an answer to your question that is exact. For me the risk of staying the way I was out-weighed the risk of cancer from hrt.

I have heard some women do well on birth control pills rather than hrt. Maybe that can be an option for you.

Let me know what you find out. I am on Estratest and all is well so far but it has only been a week.

There are other options, too. There are natural hormones you can buy at Trader Joe's or other health food stores. There is a way to find that thread on this site but I don't know how to do it and you can visit the hormone jungle, too.

Good luck,

High risk for breast cancer/ HRT?

I had my pre-op assessment today and when I signed the consent form is listed all the risks of surgery, one of these being breast cancer with HRT.
When I asked about this I was told that it was minimal because they would only be replacing the eostregen that I would be losing with my ovaries. We are the same age.
I think they have to provide you with any risk no matter how small, a bit like reading the side effects of medication.
Hope this helps and your surgery goes well.
Take care.

High risk for breast cancer/ HRT?

My doctor and my sister's doctor said that we would never be able to take HRT because our mom had breast cancer. Hers was also the most aggressive form of breast cancer. I also have problems with one of my breasts so I have an even more increased chance of it developing. It's just not worth the risk to me. HTH
