Provera for heavy long periods
Hi all,
I have no idea if this is the right forum for this question, but hopefully someone can help me. I'll be as concise as possible. I am 36 years old, have had two c-sections and a tubal. For the past six months, since I stopped nursing my youngest child, I have had very heavy, long periods, lasting anywhere from 10-21 days and coming 22 days apart (meaning sometimes I only have one day off in between bleeds. I tried bc pills, made things worse. Then had an ulstrasound, which came back normal. Doc put me on 10mg provera for 10 days, which finally stopped my bleeding, but I never had a withdrawal bleed. The good news is I haven't bled for 16 days, but since I didn't have a withdrawal bleed, my dr. wants me to go for another ultrasound on Friday. Also, when my OB did the tubal, he said that I had ALOT of scar tissue, so much so it took more than 30 minutes to find my tubes. Additionally, I hemoraged after both c-sections. And now my lower abdomen, just above my scar is much larger on the left side, than on the right.
So, has anyone had this experience and if so, any ideas on what the Dr. wants to look for in the ultrasound?
Thanks, Mary

Provera for heavy long periods
Hi Mary,
I can't speak from personal experience with regard to your specific experience, but I did have several ultrasounds along the way prior to my hyst. Often an ultrasound will be done to look for things like fibroids or a thickened uterine lining. If your last one was normal, I also wonder what your doctor is looking for this time. Have you asked him/her about this? Perhaps this is to see if there are changes in your uterus since you have taken the Provera.
I'm assuming your scar tissue was caused by having the c-sections and/or tubal rather than something like endometriosis, right? Anytime you have abdominal surgery there is a chance of developing scar tissue, unfortunately.
Keep us posted on what you find out on Friday and how you are doing. I hope the heavy bleeding does not return.
Beth

Thanks for your thoughts Beth
I spoke to my Dr. today and apparently my ultrasound was only normal in the sense that I did not have fibroids. The lining of my uterus was 9.9 mm, which under most circumstances was fine, but because I had been bleeding for more than 20 days at the time, it wasn't really normal. So, the ultrasound on Friday is to see what the Provera did to my uterus and if it is even thicker now that I've had some days with no bleeding.
So, we'll see what that brings.
Mary
