Surgeries

Appendectomy in 1958.
Kidney stone surgery #1 in 1970 when they used the huge cut across the side.
Kidney stone surgery #2 in 1980 and they used the same incision line as the first time. I didn't notice a difference in recovery or more problems with second surgery over first.
TAH/BSO vertical inciision 3/28/01.
Port insertion 4/17/01.
Elbow radial head removal surgery 2/9/04.

I Am Taking A Survey

I have had a c-section in 1981...in 1984 my doc used the same insision line for another c-section but cut out the scar tissue from the first and cleaned the incion line up a bit. Then in 2003 I had my hysterectomy using same inscion line only longer and not as pretty looking. But i have had no trouble with any of them and not sure what your next surgery is but it ought to be okay.

They used the same incision point for both my surgeries.....I actually ended up with a mini tummy tuck because of the scar tissue from the first surgery.

Are they talking about a "new incision"?

I Am Taking A Survey

I had a colon resection in '97 and a TAH-BSO in April "03 both using the same incision site. Healed quickly from both, but the scar was not as neat and pretty after the TAH. Several breast surgeries, but that is an entire different part of my body.

Rosalie,
I had the exenteration in 2002, with a vertical incision, an emergency resection 6 weeks later, using same incision but extending it upwards 3 inches.
In 2003 I had the colostomy reversed using original incision.

Hmm, let's see:
  • 1975: First laparoscopy (when it was totally new technology) for "scar tissue of unknown etiology, cannot rule out pelvic inflammatory disease due to STD (gee, was a virgin at the time...hmmm)
  • 1982: D & C for miscarriage
  • 1991: Diagnostic laparoscopy, where endo was confirmed but NOT removed
  • 1994: Emergency removal of ectopic pregnancy, with bowel resection (it was in the cul-de-sac)
  • 1995: "Crash" (emergency) c-section, "bikini" incision
  • 2002: SAH-BSO, vertical incision (nice upside-down cross on my belly): stage IV endo, giant endometrioma, adhesions and extra blood supply everywhere, and cul-de-sac obliterated with adhesions ("frozen pelvis")
  • 2004?: Possible trachelectomy for CIN and definite adhesion removal, incision to be determined, but probably vertical again
In a way, I'm in the same boat you are -- have to decide on a surgery with conflicting advice and conflicting emotions. Next Pap will tell the tale -- and even if it's negative, I'm asking for a culposcopy with a new GYN-oncologist. My GYN has been very upfront with me on this, but my symptoms are becoming more worrisome, and we're doing another CA-125 with this next visit.

Like you, I'm looking for a sign, and as much input as I can get!
