Gas - What is going on with this stuff
I am in agony. Feel like if I could just pass one real good one, I would be ok. It feels like I have some kind of stomach flu. I am also freezing.
What can I do

Gas-X, water no ice, walking.
I had a near death experience from gas pains. (OK, maybe not quite NEAR death, but it was just awful)
How many days post op are you?

Gas - What is going on with this stuff
For the gas walking really helps. The motion of a rocking chair is supposed to help get the gas moving also.
Since you are feeling like you have some kind of stomach flu and are cold, you should call your DR. It's possible that it could be an infection of some type. Have you taken your temp? I was told if my temp got above 100 to call the DR asap.
Best wishes to you, and I hope you pass that gas soon!

Gas - What is going on with this stuff
Sadie,
Like Tracy99 I almost had a "near death experience" with gas when I was 5 days post op. The day I was released from the Castle (Surgery Thursday, release Saturday) I had minimal gas. But the more people fed me the more my gas built up until finally on my 5th day I thought I was going to die. My DH went out and bought me Milk of Mag. because I hadn't done a B.M. and MAN did that help a lot with the gas. Whew! But let me tell you there were noises coming from the bathroom that could have scared off a pack of wolves. No lie I swear! My husband couldn't believe how LOUD I was. He was in our bedroom and the master bathroom is right off the bedroom and he could hear me. LOL!
Believe it or not I was always cold too... even though it was hot and humid outside. I was told it's my body adjusting due to the anesthesia. Apparently anesthesia can sit in your body for a while as it adheres itself to the bodie's fat tissue and so it can take days for it to leave your system. I do not know how true this is, however, eventually my "chills" passed. In the meantime the hospital called every day to check up on me and see how I was doing and when I told them about the gas and the chills, the resident didn't think it was any cause for concern. However, I agree with the other post, you may want to call your doctor and run it past him/her just in case. Better safe than sorry, right?
Well good luck and I hope your gas passes soon. I know how you feel if it's any consolation. Oh and btw, when peope ask me about my surgery I tell them that the gas was definitely the worst aspect of my recovery (seriously). Ha-Ha!
Take care and warm regards,
-Sue

Gas - What is going on with this stuff
Sue,
I am LMAO right now. That is so funny. I have never in my life had problems with gas. I could fart at the drop of a hat. I have breast cancer and have been under anesthesia a few times this year but man this one was a doosey. I fellt tike the blueberry girl in the Willy Wonka movie. Plus I count poop for anything. I only ate soft foods and always had fruit with everything. I drank so much water they pulled my cath a bit early because I was filling the thing up so often. They told me on sat surg on weds if I didnt pass some good gas or have a bm I had to stay another night!! The nurse brought me gas-x and milk of mag. I wated a few hrs then I said what else ya got?? She said he ordered a suppository I give it to me!!! I just wanted to sleep in my own bed. I finally pooped 2 turds but enough to get me out of the joint!!!! At home I have ben doing stool softeners and then the other day I almost had diareha so I stopped the softeners. I know my husband is in shock I cant fart but its slowly comming down. I can imagine your dh outside the room thinking you blew up the toliet. I'm still laughing!!!!

Gas - What is going on with this stuff
Can you say sitting on a knife?
That's what it felt like - sitting on a knife. First they didn't put me on solid food at the hospital because they wanted to be sure there was movement (they listened for it as I'm sure they did with you) and then when they kept hearing movement, but nothing else, they gave me solid food to try to "encourage" it.
OMG - really it felt like I was sitting on a knife (did I already say that?)
They gave me a stool softener and gas-x and the last night of my stay in the hospital it happened - I thought I was going to blow a hole in the wall of the bathroom - the previous poster said it right - it was an explosion. Keep walking - especially after meals - and drink your fluids.
I'm home and still a bit gassy, but feel much better. Fortunately, my DH and I have never been shy about passing gas!

Gas - What is going on with this stuff
You will all be happy to know that the gas is finally moving freely. I would have never thought passing gas would be such an issue. My husband had a good laugh at my expense last night. In order to "do the deed" I would have to stop grab a hold of the back of a chair bend over and go for it. The bad thing about it is, it is only a little bitty poof of air. Not quite the explosion I had hoped for.
Anyway, thanks for all your stories and comments. Today I am calling my doctor about the night sweats I am having and the chills.
Take care

Gas - What is going on with this stuff
I am much further than you are in recovery, and I am having the same thing....still. It is off and on. I have teen boys, they and thier father(you know how guys are )often have contests. I can blow them all away(pun intended)
Just as I am getting back to normal I am hit with the gas pains, and the tummy swelling. GUH If it didn't hurt so much, we would probly laugh at ourselves as well.

Gas - What is going on with this stuff
In all honesty, the worst part of the whole experience for me was the gas. I've never had pain like that before. I never thought I would pray to be able to "toot". I was taking pain pills for the gas!!! Luckily it is usually just for a couple of days, but it is brutal!! Good luck ladies.
