Not sure how the Emotions will be AFTER???

Since my roller coaster of a female life has been goin I have had lots of setbacks in my personal life as well. These things have included a house flood, car accident and other ailments and problems. I found that along with being on a miriad of medications for my female problems that all of a sudden depression seemed like the most common thing that cropped up. I have been through depression a long time ago and I know I dont handle stress well. I am kinda not sure if its all the hormonal issues and the endo and all the other garbage that is contributing or do I actually have depression.

So with all that aside my question is: after surgery i am concerned that I will become more depressed or is it likely that I will feel better????? Should this be something that I discuss beforehand with my family dr?

I hope I have given you enuf info to help me.

Thanks
Linda

Hi Linda!

You most definitely should talk to your doctor about the depressed feelings you have been experiencing. From what I have been told by my doctor and from what I have read in my own research, women who have a prior history of depression have a stronger likelihood of experiencing depression as a reaction to their hyst, than those who have never had a mood disorder in the past. Keep in mind that a history of depression does not "guarantee" that you will come down with it again, but you should give a "heads up" to your current medical provider.

My doctor told me something else I found interesting: that women who suffer long and greatly with gynelogical problems prior to their surgery, are often the ones who react most favorably after the surgery, since the relief from years and years of pain is such a dramatic improvement in their lives. He said that the relief is so great that many are not even bothered by surgical menopause symptoms.

Really, there's no way to predict what will happen. My best advice to you is to be very open with your doctor about what you experience. It does sound like you have been through a lot lately, and my goes out to you!

I'm sending positive thoughts and many s your way!

Hi Linda

Carmen's right about advising your doctor. Forewarned is forearmed!!!! I'm a firm believer in covering all your bases and leave nothing to chance. That way you're not going to get broadsided with something that you haven't bargained on.

All that said though, depression is not an automatic result of a hysterectomy....no way!!! But like everything else about this surgery, you just don't know what your recovery's going to be like until you're into it. You'll feel a heap better for being abreast of the possibility of depression before sugery and hopefully you can totally forget about it afterwards.

All the very best.

Not sure how the Emotions will be AFTER???

I've already warned my family that I will probably have crying fits during recovery. My adult DD, who will be taking care of me, jokingly told me she will lock me in my room and throw in chocolate periodically!

yes, i can almost guarantee you will be more depressed after the surgery. i didnt have everything going on that you do before my surgery and i was depressed. seemed like for no reason, you definately, must talk to your doctor before. it's such a major thing to go through and you dont have to be alone. talk to the doc, and the reassurance you get here helps so much. good luck! will be thinking of you
