progesterone-thyroid question

I was wondering if anyone knows about the relationship between the LACK of progesterone and the thyroid?

Since having my total hysterectomy I have gained lots of weight...I have heard that it's not just taking estrogen (I take 1mg Estradiol a day) that is causing the weight gain, but also the lack of progesterone in my body.

I have always struggled with weight, but 3 years ago, before this whole thing started I had lost 60lbs and was in fairly good shape. This weight gain is really bothering me. I am now exercising again, but even so, I am beginning to see that I can't eat the foods I used to without gaining weight instantly. I really want to know what is happening in my new body, and I just can't figure it out. Maybe I am just looking for a "magic" pill, but if there's anything I can do, I will.

Please help if you can!

Thanks

progesterone-thyroid question

Hi,

I am not sure of the thyroid connection, although I believe there is one between it and weight gain. You may need to balance your estrogen out a bit with some progesterone. I am not sure if that helps with weight issues, but for a short time, I believe that estrogen alone is fine, but at some point, I believe you should balance it with some progesterone, (even if it is a small amount).

You will get some wise advise here..Good Luck!!

Thank you for your support...I appreciate it. It just seems as if, that if our ovaries produce all three hormones, then using just one is silly....

I am still searching to see if the thyroid-progesterone-weight connection is out there!

progesterone-thyroid question

HI

Have you ever read the book..."what your doctor may not tell you about menopause" by John Lee??

I do not have trouble with my thyroid ,but his book states there is a connection to the lack of progesterone and thyroid.

Thought this might help.

Hi,

No I hadn't even heard about the book at all. Thank you. I am going to try and find it asap. My doctor doesn't think there is anything too this, but my body tells me otherwise.

Thanks so much

thyroid/progesterone

What I read somewhere (and don't ask me where...brain fog) is that estrogen dampens the thyroid and progesterone activates it so it is quite a balancing act. If I had known there was so much involved with a total hyst I would have left my good ovary. Sure regret it now but can't tell where I would be anyway. Good Luck

progesterone-thyroid question

Thanks for the heads-up April Dawn...

Deb,
I know the feeling...I struggled with the decision whether to keep my ovaries or not, but in the end it was medically necessary to take them both. Still, I think "what if?" they say if wishes were fishes we'd be covered with stinky old fish! LOL. STill, this hrt is really really difficult in so many ways.

Thanks so much

Sarah
