How many days in the hosp?

Hi!

I have read a number of posts and it seems that the time in the hospital varies from two days to five, or more. I know a lot depends on the Dr. and the procedure. I am hoping for just a plain, straighforward hysterectomy, abdominal.

I am a single mom raising three kids, ages 5, 12 and 14. I am scheduled for a TAH on October 26, and although I will be meeting with my Dr. tomorrow and finding out a lot, I was just wanting to know, from your experiences, about the length of stay.

I have to make arrangments for the kids to stay with friends for a few days, and want to have some idea what to tell them.

Thanks again!

How many days in the hosp?

Hello Shell,

I can of course only share my experience as every woman will have a different one.

My surgery (TAH) was on Thursday 9/23/04. I had no complications with the actual hysterectomy. But had a complication during surgery that was unique from others and in this forum I will share with others via Private Message. (Had nothing to do with having a hysterectomy)

I went home Saturday afternoon. My husband stayed home with me for two weeks. The doctor recommended one week, at our request approved FMLA 2 weeks due to my "unique" experience.

Due to my occupation I will have an 8 to 12 week recovery period. Not because I will feel bad that long however I have a very physically demanding occupation and I must be healed internally completely before returning.

The first week post-op I was unable to care for myself and I needed my husband with me. I hope you have a family member or good friend that would be willing to help you during that time.

Good Luck and keep us posted!

How many days in the hosp?

I hate to sound like a broken record - but it all depends.

Only your dr will be able to tell you what his/her /the hospital policy is --- and then it also depends on how well you are doing.

I know that in Europe women tend to stay in hospital longer than in North America.

I had a TAH and stayed4 nights after my surgery.

How many days in the hosp?

I had surgery TAH without any complications on October 11 early and was released early on October 13. I'm feeling really good - down to just tylenol now for the pain. I'd recommend help for house stuff so you can just relax and mend. Hope your surgery goes as easy as mine - well, so far.

How many days in the hosp?

Thanks for the insight.

I was hoping that it would not be for more than a couple of days, I hate being in the hospital!

I will keep you all posted.
