Premarin

Dear Sisters, I am 11 days post op TAH and have just returned from the MD. I have been having night sweats so bad that I have to change the sheets. My doctor has given me Premarin 0.65mg to try. I was hoping I would not have to take anything else for I took HRT for one year and believe that caused many of my problems that lead to my TAH. Anybody else taking this drug? I wondered if it would help with my mood swings, yikes sometimes I do not even want to be around me! God Bless you all and thanks for sharing it is helping so so much! Arlene (AFT)

Hi Arlene,
I'm 11 days post-op too (TAH/
BSO). I'm feeling great - actually drove myself to lunch with friends today. I had started with some signs of menopause prior to surgery - night sweats especially. Anyway - the Dr. started me on Premarin immediately after my surgery - somewhat at my request. I'm feeling great so far. No sweats, and I'm feeling in a good mood, even though I miss my work. I asked about the premarin prior to surgery and was told it was standard procedure to start the premarin or some type of estrogen if the ovaries were removed - this is the Mayo Clinic!

I took BC pills for a few months before my surgery - hated the way they made me feel in 1977 and didn't like the way they made me feel in 2004! For years I fought PMS with pretty severe moods swings, enough to try different meds, but nothing really helped.

Maybe not the help you need, but I'm happy to be able to take the medication.

Hi --

I'll be 4 years post-op from a TAH/BSO in January. I had a lot of endo (discovered at the time of surgery --- I also had a cyst on my left ovary and a uterus full of fibroids). My doc put me on 0.3 mg Premarin for the first 6 months of my recovery and then upped it to .625 mg which I have been on since I was 6 months post-op. (The lower dosage for the first 6 months was because of the endo........my doc felt it would be ok to take that small dosage during that time, but would not increase it til I was 6 months post-op).

Within a week of starting the .625 Premarin I could tell a difference in my moods and my feeling of general well-being. (The 0.3 mg dosage was definitely not enough! I had terrible mood swings and shed lots of tears during that time!) It works well for me, and I haven't had any problems with it or problems with side effects.

It may take a while for the Premarin to kick in for you.........good luck!!

I have been taking .45 Premarin since the 7th day. I am now at day 40, and have no hormone issues. I am 56 and had not even begun menopause yet. My uterus was growing so big so fast! I asked the Dr. if the horrible migrains would come back since my ovaries came out too, and he said the Premarin would prevent that...so far so good!

Hi AFT - I started crying for NO Reason whatsoever on my 6th p/op day. Dr. called in Premarin and I felt like myself again in no time. Still miss my ovaries and still have symptoms, but tolerable now. I hope you do well. You might check out the Hormone Jungle too.

Best Wishes,
Beth

Thanks for your reply's. The Premarin did not work I woke up two hours after taking it and had a headache like no other. My blood pressure went sky high and I thought I was going to die...called my doctor the next day and he has taken my off of the Premarin. Now it is back to hot flashes and feeling like a caged in animal. Arlene

I am on Premarin .625. My dr. started me on it at 10 days post op. Something about blood clotting is why he waited til the 10 day mark. They were a living he--. The hot spells were so severe I felt like someone had thrown me in a fire pit. They seemed to start almost immediately after surgery. The first 5 days I took the Premarin were horrible, terrible headaches. I suffered through thanks to my motrin. I am not 8 weeks post op and feeling great. I don't believe that I have suffered any of the severe mood swings that many mention. I do still have a hot flash/night sweat occassionally but nothing serious. Good Luck to you

I had TAH the end of May. decided not to take any hormones until my doctor talked to me about the risks of osteoporosis. I was having around 10 hot flashes a day, and then several night sweats that woke me up every time. But I didn't have any mood swings.
started taking Premarin the first of September and the end of the first week, I had NO hot flashes or night sweats. I felt so good, but now starting about month ago, I'm feeling a little depressed. I don't know why. I have everythig I want, 2 kids, husband, house, 2 cars. I've never felt like this before. My friends have noticed a change and they say it's because of the hormone.
but I know that the doctor just has to lower my dose, but then I don't know if the flashes will start again.
I think you'll really like Premarin.

I started taking Premarin .625 10 days after surgery. The night sweats and even more hit really hard, really fast. I was a bit emotional, too. I've been taking it for almost 6 weeks now, much better! It took a good 2 weeks to really be working at it's best, but life is getting much better now.
