hospital questions here

hi Ladies,

You've all been there so I thought you'd be the best to ask. I have a few basic easy questions regarding the rules at the hospital. My date is Dec 1. I'm sorry for these little detail questions but I'm getting no instructions from anyone else.

I wear glasses and would like to keep them on as long as possible. Do I take a glass case with me to surgery... or will they make me leave them with my husband?

What is the rule for wedding rings? Is it just best to leave them at home?

I'm trying not to dwell on too much and I check over here to keep a pulse on all of you. I want to be on this side so badly.
A speedy and uneventfull recovery to everyone,
Thanks,
Maralyn

Hi Maralyn,
Right before I went in to the surgery the nurse handed my glasses to my hubby so they would not be lost or broken.
And I did not wear any jewelery at all, just took a old cheap watch in my bag to wear after surgery. I would not take your wedding ring or any other good jewelery because they will make you take it off anyway, and I be afraid of losing something.
Best wishes & tc

They told me at my preop to leave EVERYTHING valuable at home. I left all my jewelry, my purse.. everything. I'm sure they will have you leave your glasses with your husband, or your support person when they take you to OR. I wish you luck... and believe it or not... the time will pass quickly.

My hospital said no jewelry, no fingernail/toenail polish, no make-up, glasses or contacts in a case, no metal anywhere (the nurse asked me, do you have any metal anywhere that I can't see. I assumed she meant body piercing), no valuables.

Used to be, they taped over the wedding rings and you went in....THIS time, they made me take them off. I brought a box for them, and my DH put them back on my hand before I was even really awake I guess, because they were right there, first thing when I remember being awake.

Glasses are different. I'm legally blind without mind, and HATE not being able to see. I asked if they could be last things off and first back on. One of the nurses there had figured out making a disposable glasses case with soft paper towel or something like that, and tape. She even uses a rubber stamp marking them "GLASSES." Anyway, I was wearing them when I kissed my DH and family goodbye and they wheeled me away. I remember seeing the double doors to the OR, but have NO recollection whatsoever of the inside of the place. My glasses were on my face when I woke up. The pre-op and recovery nurses were SOOO nice to me...although I gotta say, I can't remember the recovery room either, 'cause they had a lot of trouble waking me up, I heard. I was already in a regular room when I had my first real consiousness. It was night time....so I slept some more. I vaguely remember my DH kissing me goodnight before he left.....and then I was awake enough to barf. Some time in the the night, someone took off the glasses....maybe even me, LOL....They were right where I could reach them first thing in the morning, though.

I hope you have nurses as sweet as I did. Good luck!

Grace & peace,

Terry

My castle said no jewelry at all -- I think as much for security reasons as anything.

I kept my glasses on right up to the operating room. Then they put them in a case, but they never left me. I'm so nearsighted that I really feel disoriented w/o my glasses, so I'm grateful I was able to keep them!

I didn't take a purse, or any money. Didn't need them.

hospital questions here

Hi, my experience was, I gave my glasses to my husband. (I found I really didn't need them after because I was so out of it with the pain control meds) I can't remember anything from the first day and very little from the second. The wedding rings...I left the diamonds at home and just wore the band. They put a bandaid over it to keep it safe on my finger. Hope that helps and good luck!

I find it interesting how every hospital/doctor is different. Mine didn't say one word about nail polish....the toes are always colorful! I did get to wear my wedding rings. They would have had to amputate a finger or cut the rings to get them off so they just taped over them. No big deal. I did wear my glasses just until they took me back, then I left them with my husband. An old watch to wear after is a great idea, especially if it has a lighted face. I had a clock on the wall in my room, but during the night I had to turn on the light and put on my glasses to see the time....easier said than done at times!!
Blessings to you Maralyn during your surgery and recovery.

No jewelry. I left my wedding ring at home. I used to be hung up on never having taken my wedding ring off, but then I had two babies and all that went out the window. Also, you may swell up, so I would wait a while to put the ring back on! I am one week post op and still can't get mine back on. I have my "fat ring" from when I was pregnant that I use instead. Some cheap department store ring I bought when I swelled up like a balloon when I was pregnant with my first baby.
