Is i safe to use progestrone cream if you have no ovaries or uterus?

I had a hyst 2 years ago and have used vivelle dot patches up until Aug. 2004.

I have very little sexual desire. Someone told me to try progestrone cream. I am using some from a health food store and it's supposed to have 20 mg to a 1/4 teaspoon. I wasn't using enough at first, but not I am using about 1/4 in the morning and 1/4 in the evening (for the past 2 weeks). I haven't seen any difference yet. Also, I am using a compounded testosterone cream 2% once a day.

I am on an antidepressant (Celexa 40 mg) and wonder if this is making it worse.

Any advice?

Hi!
I have ovaries, but I have just started using the progesterone cream that I purchased from here.
I use it only as part of my cycle, when I am at my most frazzled, and I can notice a big difference in about 2 hours.
Are you using it at night? as it does calm you and help you sleep. I tried it the first few days every other day, just cos I'm a sceptic, to see if it was helping, or it was just a co-incidence. It definetly helped me, and I was nowhere near as tired or anxious in the mornings.

I use the cream at night and in the morning. I really need, I guess, to talk to someone who has had their ovaries out also, but I appreciate your comments.

I am having hot flashes which I think the progestrone cream is really not helping.

But it's the sexual desire that I miss. I just don't seem to really get aroused.

Hi Bev

Yes it is perfectly safe. Did you know that men produce small amounts of progesterone too?

I have no uterus and no ovaries. I was using the cream but like you it did not help with the flashes. Then I went to a hormone doctor (not an endocrinologist but a GP with a special interest in hormones)

I am now on a combined bioidentical triest/progesterone troche (kind of like a jube you let melt in your mouth) And that has made a big difference. This dr tested every hormone the body makes like testsoterone and dhea all of which influence your libido.

The cream seems to help some but not all.

Perhaps do an internet search for Drs like this in your area.

GrandmaBev,
Many antidepressants can cause lack of sexual desire. You might ask your doctor if you could try Lexapro (similar to Celexa) or Wellbutrin, which is not supposed to affect sexual desire as much as others. (Some people says it actually improves things.) Wellbutrin seems to work better for me, in this regard.

Hormones can definitely affect desire. Unfortunately, there is no one "recipe" which works for everyone. You might try a different form of testosterone. They are supposed to be coming out with a testosterone patch for women -- maybe in spring, 2005. I think estrogen is usually used for hot flashes, rather than progesterone, but I'm not a doctor. . . . Best of luck to you. I know (from experience !) that this can be discouraging.

I kept both ovaries but had the right one taken out -- and the last one isn't doing 'well' .. how do you track your cycle -- since going into "early" menopause my basal temps are low, low and unchanging....

Thanks ...
