Why can't I take ibuprofen before surgery?

I have a question. I received a pre-op info sheet and it states that I should not take ibuprofen or aspirin two weeks prior to surgery. I understand the aspirin but does anyone know the consequence of ibuprofen pre-op?

I LIVE on ibuprofen. My pain is so intense I don't know if I can make it another week without it. My doctor prescribed Lortabs and that barely takes the edge off. Any insight would be appreciated!

First, I'm so sorry you're having this pain!

I took a great deal of ibuprofen pre-op, too. I was told to stop taking it because it has blood-thinning properties similar to those found in aspirin.

I was still having a great deal of pain, though -- and my doctor said I could still take smaller doses, as long as I alternated them with Tylenol.

But this is just my experience -- I would advise you to call your doctor and ask what the correct course of action is for you. There may be reasons why you should not take any at all.

Hope this helps!

Yes, Ibuprofen has asprin in it and works as a blood thinner - which is why people take it for their hearts. You should also stay away from garlic tablets and vitamin E as they work as blood thinners too. My friend just had minor surgery and had to do the same - she also was told to stay away from these afterwards. Check with your doctor to be sure.
