Question about ovarian failure

I am concerned about ovarian failure(with one or both ovaries in tact).

Does anyone know how long before this happens or even if it does?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

Happy Holidays to all

Question about ovarian failure

Hi Mem-Sahib There isn't any specific time at which ovarian failure can occur after a hysterectomy. Some ladies find that their ovaries don't work immediately after surgery, and they may or may not start working again later; others find that they work just fine, as if the hyst never happened. I believe the average is that they go into natural menopause a few years earlier than they would have without the surgery.

Here's a link from our Resources directory, which explains it a little better:

Although some DRs will say that premature ovarian failure *never* occurs, or even *cannot* occur, after a hyst, we do have many members who would argue that it can and sometimes does.

Here's another link from Resources, to a summary of a small study on premature ovarian failure after hysterectomy:

I hope this helps!

Question about ovarian failure

Hi Mary,
I kept both my ovaries, and cycled for three months, at 3 weeks, 7 weeks, and 11 weeks. I was concerned last weekend that they had shut down, I was having hot flashes, palpitations, and just plain nastiness with anxiety, mood swings and the ever lovely crying for no reason. I think it was medication related, but they could shut down at any time. It is difficult to gage when and if, as we are all so individual. I am going to start a journal to see what is happening when, and so I can let my doctor know and see what is going on, what is not....

Hugs
Kat
