Anesthesia

Hello Hystersisters:

I am due to have SAH w/possible BSO on Feb. 3rd. I have opted to have the anesthesia. I have a couple of questions.

1) Is there any type of nausea medication that they can give me while they are administering the anesthesia? If so, do I ask for this or is it the normal procedure? I was very nauseated after having my c-section so I'm want to avoid that feeling if at all possible.

2) What about pain medication? Is this administered during the anesthesia process or after surgery?

Sorry to sound so stupid but really need to know.
Thanks. NY Woman

To answer question 1, ask the A-man for anti-nausea meds when you meet them and tell them about your last surgery and the affects of the anasthesia, and they will do everything in their power to stop you being sick.

Pain meds are normally given (depends on Dr) before you come round and are topped up to the required amount when they ask you how bad the pain is. If you have a PCA pump they will put this in your hand and tell you to push the button.
If its via drip they add it to this or intramuscular depends on what is written up for you.

Discuse pain control with your Dr as it is very important.

Thanks for the information. I will discuss this with the A-man and my doctor.

Anesthesia

Hi fellow upstate NYer,
When I went for my pre-op I told the anesthist I wanted something to prevent nausea. He gave me a type of motion sickness patch which he told me to put on the the night before surgery. He then said he waould take it off after 24 hrs and slowly give me nausea meds and then wean me off them.
He also gave me a pepsid to take the night before.
Hope this helps.
