5 wks post-op, now ovarian cyst! Help!

If you have a cyst on just the one ovary, and that needs to be treated with surgery, they do not have to take both ovaries only the one that is affected.
Your other remaining ovary takes over producing the hormones your body requires with no problem at all.

In this instance you should not need HRT at all.

I had a large cyst on my right ovary, which ruptured aout 6 wks before surgery and was already growing back and the size of an orange when I had my TAH.
I actually asked that if there was even any cysts on my ovaries that they be removed, my Dr didn't do this and just cleaned the offending ovary up
I'm just waiting for the darn thing to grow back so I can say 'I told you so.'

5 wks post-op, now ovarian cyst! Help!

I guess I'll know my outcome by around this time next week. I had never had an ovarian cyst (to my knowledge) until this one was found recently and it has totally thrown me off.

When I had the hyst. in '03, part of me almost wishes I had of insisted that he remove my ovaries. My mother had a hyst. at an earlier age than me (I was 35, she was 29) and she had always had problems with cysts on her ovaries. Knowing the family history, I probably should have spoke up to my Dr and really pushed that option because if things can go wrong, it normally happens to me!

If the dr. decides that at least the one ovary has to come out, then I will probably let her go for both, as I don't want to have this problem reoccur a year down the road and have to have it removed anyway. I really don't mind having to take hormones as I have most of the symptoms now (hot flashes, sweating, night sweats, moodiness). Hormone levels were checked but mine were in the 'normal range' but no-one told me what the 'normal range' should be...

Here I go rattling again! My daughter has a dental appt. this morning so I'm enjoying not doing anything for a while, anytime time I can skip from work right now is a blessing!

Jen:

I had cysts on my ovaries before my surgery. The doc wanted to drain the cyst and leave my ovaries. I spoke with a lot of people and decided to have him remove my ovaries as well, because I did not want to repeat my surgery. (ya only have one time to cut on me..hehe).

I'm on hrt and I feel great.

do some research first

Well I will throw in my worth. I think unless you absolutely have to, I would keep every ovary you can. I had a lot of the symptoms of PCOS with cysts that would be very painful, but they do rupture and resolve most of the time. Unless they grow really fast and are suspicious.

At the young age of in your 30's that is a lot of years of HRT and that carries it's own risks. And I can tell you from personal experience that HRT is not quite the same as what your natural body produces. I was told to have everything taken out because I would be going through menopause anyhow(I was 54 at the time of surgery)and wouldn't need them. My libido left town and my sexual response went along with it. I am not saying it would happen to you, but I can only tell you my experience. I would not have a healthy organ removed just to prevent something unless I did tons of research.

Go over and read some in the Hormone Jungle to see what the ladies are doing there-I am not saying it is totally wrong, but it is better to be prepared that be surprised!

I hope you get some resolution to your pain soon. I know I felt like I had been shot in the hip for months before my surgery, and that was no fun either. 's

5 wks post-op, now ovarian cyst! Help!

This is my story! I had a TVH last March due to a prolapse of the uterus. It was assumed that my ovaries were healthy and we agreed to leave them. However, during surgery a large dermoid cyst was discovered on my right ovary which the surgeon told me about at my post op check. Because dermoid cysts tend to be bilateral (form on both ovaries) I was advised to have both ovaries removed. Went back to the castle just before Christmas and had BSO. I am now 5 weeks post op and just beginning to get back to normal. Having an incision definitely alters your recovery time! Still get swelly belly and cramps in the evenings. Started taking Premarin 2 weeks post op and have had no problems so far.

I lost rso due to endo 2001. I had LAVH 11-17-04 and lso removed due to endo. Both times, both ovaries covered w/endo so best to remove it or come back in months later to remove. If you have endo, your ovaries left from hyst will still produce hormones that will trigger endo to still go forth and multiply and make your life miserable. This is my story. Really think about it for yourself and as someone said, go with your gut instinct. I'm not on HRT due to having to abstain for 3-6 mos due to endo. No serious symptoms yet but I do take a mega high potency vitamin for women.
