bladder leaks

I'll be having a TAH/BSO on the 31st. Everything is moving kind of fast and I forgot to mention to my Dr. at my app. on Thursday (when everything was decided) that I sometimes have trouble with my bladder. Umm, you know sometimes you sneeze or cough and you wet yourself?! I will call this week and talk to his nurse (I've got several other questions that I didn't think to ask at my app.).

What I would like to know, is this normal for someone with an enlarged uterus and will it correct itself after the surgery or perhaps I need something else done with my bladder at the time of surgery? Anyone have any experience with this?

this needs to be discussed with your dr prior to surgery.
sometimes its just a matter of removing the uterus off of the bladder; or it might be something that needs correcting during the hysterectomy; your dr may want to run some tests to determine if the leaking is of any significance.

I agree that this is something that needs to be discussed with your doctor: whether or not removing the uterus will be enough to rectify the problem all depends on why you're having stress incontinence. If it's because the enlarged uterus is putting a lot of pressure on your bladder, then the hyst may be all that's required. However, if there is something else going on, you may need additional repairs to stop the leakeage.

In my case, for a while, the removal of the uterus and the rectocele repairs were enough to stop the leakeage. However, unfortunately, 11 months later the leakeage returned with a vengence, to the point where I'm now back to wearing pads, only this time it's due to the intensity of the leakeage

In my case, the stress incontinence is due to the extreme deterioriation of my pelvic floor. The deterioration is the result of a mixture of things: carrying and delivering vaginally two very large babies; carrying around a huge fibroid that was pressing on my internal organs; and the vaginal hyst: while the rectocele repairs are holding, the pelvic floor is still very weak.

I wish you best of luck in your quest for answers and with your upcoming surgery.

Thank you both for your replies.

It's strange that I can go for long periods of time without a problem then all of a sudden it's back and I'm having to change panties several times in an hour. This may go on for a few days then go away for a long time and then here I go again.

I assumed part of it was getting older (I'm 46) but I'm now wondering how much the fibroids and enlarged uterus may be playing a part. I will definitely be making the call before my surgery.
