New Pilates dvd's just came

I have the basic, I ordered some new ones, they just came so I haven't had a chance to watch them yet. I got the Back workout, and two from the Endless Fitness series: "Beginners" and "Strength and Body Slimming". The Endless Fitness series is for those "who are just beginning exercising for the first time, returning to exercising after a long break, have a substantial weight loss goal or are a bit older."

I'll let you know how they are.

MaryLou, I'm anxious to hear how you like your new dvd's. Please do let us know once you've tried them. I'm thinking of getting some, not only for me, but for DH. He needs to strengthen his back, and I thought this might be just the thing for him. (And I'd join him and get the benefits too).

I have several books on Pilates. However, there is nothing like the class. I would really like to know a good DVD that is equivalent to a good class.

I've never taken a pilates class, actually it's been ages since I've taken any type of exercise class. I haven't had a chance to actually "do" the new DVD's, but I watched them this morning. So far what I really like about the Endless Fitness series is the people doing the moves. The look more like "real" people than some others.

In the Winsor basic dvd there is a section that does a great job of showing exactly how the moves should be done correctly. And I don't find Mari's voice annoying after the first couple of viewings.

DH has gone to bed and I'm waiting for DS to leave for the night so I can have some privacy, then I'll let you know how they are!

I think it all depends on what you consider a "good class" judibethann. I have a Winsor Pilates DVD set and it is very similar to the class I take at my gym. (though I do agree with ML on Mari's voice).

The 20-minute workout is pretty much our Pilates for Dummies class, and the longer DVD (the name is eluding me right now) is equal to our regular Pilates class.

Hi Maralyn,

Pilates is an exercise in which one can strengthen the abs, lengthen the muscles -- tone and shape the body! If you go read some of the other threads in this forum you will get a better understanding !

Pilates is a great way to get in/ or stay in shape -- want to join us ? All ya need is a mat and a pilates tape/dvd or attend a class.

Thanks for filling me in. It sounded like a new exercise fad...but the word pilates sounds more like something sinful that should be ordered to eat!

I'll have to think about joining. Still tender from surgery and feeling some backlashes from moving my mother. Do need something for the tummy though!

Now if it had something to do with chocolate, I'd be joining tonight!

Thanks,
Maralyn

Maralyn:

I hear you on the chocolate.

Joseph Pilates is the originator of this form of exercise.

Pilates requires a lot of focus and exact positioning - that's what I like about it ... I have control issues and this gives me something positive to control.

It is sort of like yoga. If you like yoga you may like Pilates. I take a class at the Y and LOVE it.

And as a beginner which would you suggest as the best one to start with??
I am 45 and had a pelvic clearance 4 years ago so am I alright to do this?? I do alot walking with my Staffie Tush who is two years old but I would not say I was super fit!!
I love my food too but try to keep it sensible with just the odd choccie.
This site is great.
