how long does it take to recover?

Boy, that's a tough call Snuggles. You can be sure you're going to need a minimum of 6 weeks to recover. Of course, that also depends on the extensiveness and type of hyster you're having. You're talking about making a bus trip several hours, one way, at about the 3 to 4 week point. I would take it up with your doctor. I know that I took a 7 hour ride in a car at 4 weeks and felt like I had been dragged the whole way by the time we got home... and the next day I felt like doo doo!

What I have found about recovery is that it's a process of your innerds adjusting to the newness.... the numbness wearing off.... getting used to and working through all the new and sometimes strange feelings. I'm at 6 weeks TODAY and feel really well. You have to take in to consideration that if you "overdo" it then you risk ending up in the hospital again for repairs. You also risk not enabling your insides to heal properly which could cause problems with scar tissue. Again, meaning more surgery down the road.

Best of luck on this decision. Goodness knows you have a really good reason to want to go. Is moving your surgery up an option?
