suggestions for meditation/relaxation CD's, tapes??

Hello everyone!

Does anyone have any suggestions for tapes or CD's for learning meditation/relaxation techniques, for beginners? Or do you think it's advisable for an absolute beginner to try it that way, without "hands-on" help?

I really get wound up sometimes, and I know that everything would be so much simpler if I could just relax and not freak out about things. Also, my husband has insomnia, and we both think meditation might be a help to him as well...being able to learn it at home would be so convenient for us.

Sorry if this is "off topic" or whatever, but I just thought there might be someone who could help us out.

Cheers!

Oh Janet,

I would be VERY remiss if I did not advise you to pick up ANY of dr. Bernie Siegel's meditation/visualization CD's.

My own personal favorite CD of his is
"Meditations for Enhancing Your Immune System" http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...820710-4651324

I took this cd with me to EVERY chemo treatment and I still listen to it on occasion now. I didnt' even buy it, I borrowed it from my local library. Repeatedly. LOL

ANYTHING by Dr. Bernie would be recommended, IMHO.

Also, for sleep problems, have you tried a sound machine? I got one for Christmas...it is a waterful machine that has a few choices of background sounds....rainforest, rain, sunrise, chimes, thunder (didnt' quite get THAT one!). I find it VERY helpful to drown out OTHER outside noises that disturb my precious sleep.

Best,

Hi,

I have not heard any of the Bernie Siegel tapes. But this summer at the Relay for Life, they gave each survivor a tape by Belleruth Naparstek. I liked it so much, I ordered three CD's from her site. They also have the Bernie Siegel and other tapes and CD's at this site.

Good luck. I hope you find something that helps.

I have that Bernie Siegel CD and also Belleruth Naparstek. I love both of them. I also have one called Prepare for Surgery by Peggy Huddleston. It is basic relaxation and is still appropriate after surgery. It is probably my favorite. I think relaxation and visualization has been very helpful to me.

K9,

I have been looking for a sound machine exactly like you described. Would you mind sharing where you got it? Thanks, Judy

Hi Judy,

I got it for Christmas, but I think it came from JC Penny's.

Its by Homedics, and it's the "rain forest fountain Envirascape soothing rains'' with light.

Here's what it looks like : http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_g...terid=4268287/

I really like it and have found that I do sleep better with it. My only problem with it is that it's bigger than I would like, but.......whaddaya gonna do?

Best,
K9

I bought an ordinary clock radio/CD player at Walmart for $27. I use it to play soothing music in my bedroom. One of my favorites is Steve Halperin, Sleep Soundly.

I developed a pretty bad case of anxiety and panic which landed me in a day program for these disorders over the summer. Attending this program really helped, but what I found equally as helpful was getting via Amazon the tape Passing Through Panic with accompanying book Peace from Nervous Suffering. Both were created by Dr.Claire Weekes (1903-1990) who was a renowned Australian pioneer in the field of stress, panic, and anxiety disorders. The helpful aspect of these works is that you will gain an understanding of how stress effects physiology such as adrenal gland depletion, etc., which spirals to anxiety and panic. The tape and book would be a great start point and adjunct to other relaxation techniques.

Thank you to everyone who replied to my post! I will definitely do some research on your suggestions, and look forward to starting my relaxation and meditation.

Hope you all are doing well!
