Grapefruit juice

I have been told not to take grapefruit juice with HRT. It was in a leaflet that the gp gave me yesterday, and now I can't find the leaflet, to give you the full details.
I wanted to know if it was to take the tablets, or at all while I'm on them.
About to take a tablet now.

Grapefruit juice

Hi Fran

This topic was discussed not too long ago. Here's a link to that previous discussion about grapefruit juice.

I hope this helps, and I hope you feel better very soon!

Grapefruit juice

Hi,
I've heard that grapefruit and grapefruit juice has some interaction with some medications. I've never heard that there was any problem in taking it with hormones, but I'm not sure. Anyway, that's interesting. Please let us know what you find out.

Grapefruit juice

Grapefruit juice alters your stomach and intestinal acids so that you absorb a larger and unpredictable amount of any pills that you take with it. You can have grapefruit and grapefruit juice in a different meal.

So basically any pill isn't a good idea, but ones where you do best at a predictable level are worse--thyroid replacement, hormone replacement, blood pressure medicine. But its effect is only when grapefruit and pill are in the same place at the same time.

Hope that helps!

It's funny, we were talking about that problem here years before it showed up in the official prescribing information. for hystersisters.

Grapefruit juice

Grapefruit juice should be avoided COMPLETELY with some meds (anti-seizure meds... specifically Depakote and I'm sure there are others). Check with your pharmacist. Some pharmacies give you paperwork with all of your prescriptions, the info should be in there.

Grapefruit juice

Hi!
I have found it!
Grapefruit juice contains a flavonoid called quercetin, which can increase oestradiol in the body, and reduce other oestrogens. It therefore overall increases oestrogen activity in the body.
This study however was noticed with a volume of quercetin more than which is normally found in the body, but I would err on the side of caution.
Quercetin is found in a lot of fruit, so I suppose we shouldn't be guzzling any fruit juice by the gallon!
