Can adenomyosis gro out of the uterus?

Does anyone know if Adenomyosis can grow or spread beyond the uterus like endometriosis can???

I have both conditions and I know my doctor is worried about them coming back since I am now on hormones. I also know that endometriosis can come back - what about adenomyosis?

Any light you can shed would be wonderful

I don't believe that adenomyosis can come back because it's contained inside of the uterus. I had adenomyosis as well but not endo. I've done a lot of research on it and I know that removal of the uterus and cervix is the only sure way to be rid of adenomyosis. I kept my ovaries though because I can't take hormone replacement and I'm only 44.

I've read that endo is adeno...same tissue growth. If the stuff is found outside the uterus, it's called endo...if it's found inside, it's called adenomyosis.

You don't have to have one to have the other. Both feed on estrogen....from ovaries or HRT. Endo is the problem because it can become scattered when removing it. It's those little specs that can attach and begin to grow again.

Like Kathy said, once a total hysterectomy is done adenomyosis is gone. Endo can reappear if estrogen is present and those specs were left behind. Often doctors won't start the HRT for months waiting for those specs to die off. This is probably what your doctor is referring to. Ask him to make sure.

I had both also. Luckily, as the other sisters said, when the uterus is removed it takes the adeno with it! Yea! (Too bad we can't say the same for endo) Here's a few links from our Resource section. I am on HRT also. I had Stage IV and I do worry that it could cause problems down the road. For me, my Dr. felt the benefits of my HRT outweighed the risks. Crossing my fingers, like the rest of us in the boat. I hope you have a smooth recovery and no more trouble with your endo.
