Gas used during surgery

I know that the abdomen is inflated with gas during laproscopic surgery, does anyone know if it is used for TVH? I have been having some terrible shoulder pain and have been told it could be trapped gas.

was your surgery done laproscopically or abdominally? When was your surgery? Was it done in December?

Gas used during surgery

I had total vaginal hysterectomy on Dec 7th. Had uterus, cervix, tubes, & ovaries removed. My recovery has been fairly uneventful, no problems so far.

you would not be having shoulder pain this long after a laproscopic procedure, the body absorbs the gas within a few days on it's own. Are you having any other pains besides the shoulder pain? Which shoulder is it? Any foods that make it worse?

Carbon dioxide (co2) is not used during a TVH.

Gas used during surgery

Is there another way that they do this surgery that I'm not aware of? As far as I know they always have to go into the abdomen to "loosen" everything up laproscopically, then pull the uterus out through the vagina... I'm a nursing student & actually watched a TVH be done the other day & CO2 was used... Is there another way where they don't have to go into the abdomen at all? Please don't read me as "knowing it all", I am actually just curious as to if there is another way to approach the surgery that I am not aware of ;-)

Gas used during surgery

Hi Cajun,
Don't worry about anyone thinking you are a knowitall, there is so many different things that can happen or ways to do this, I don't think anyone could know everything. That's what this forum is for, questions??? My surgery was done completely through the vagina, no cuts in the abdomen at all. The pain has been across both shoulders in the back. If they didn't use any gas during the surgery, maybe it's just how I am laying at night. It is better this morning.

Gas used during surgery

As a long time surgery nurse I can assure you that gas is not used during a TVH. Take into account that during most of the surgery your abdominal cavity is exposed to air by way of the opening made where your cervix was. Hope this helps you understand the gas pains type feeling you are having.
