Daily Medications

I take several different things to prevent migraines. Do I bring them to the hospital, or do they have to give them to me there. I don't want to break any rules.

I was asked what I take when I did my pre-op screening - and he said that I should take any medication the day of the operation, but he didn't indicate if I should bring them with me.

if you have not had your pre-op screening (blood work etc.) make sure you ask then - if you have already had it - call and ask if you should bring the meds. They may take you off of them for the surgery.

Daily Medications

I would like to put my two cents in if its okay. I take medicine on a daily basis for asthma, high blood pressure and fibromyalgia. I brought my meds with me and glad I did. Once I was settled into my room and for the next six days I was hospitalized, I would ask for my daily meds. I was often told they didn't have the brand I am use to taking or there always seemed to be a problem. I would say, take them with you in the original prescription bottles and then turn them over to the head nurse and then have someone who can remember to ask for them back when you are discharged.

It worked well for me the last time I was in the hospital. I did not do it this time and I trully regret it.

Another tip .... I asked my doctor to write a prescription for pain so that my husband could fill it and have it at home when I was released from the hospital. That was a great relief to have the pain meds at home and ready for me when I really needed them.

Take care and good luck

I took my meds with me...
they told me not to take anything the day of my surgery.

I had my own there so I could take them like usual... It was much easier than waiting for the nurses to get it for me.

Great suggestions. I would say take them with you to be on the safe side as well. It's much better to have them and not need them then to need them and not have them.

Sometimes they advise you to take your meds the morning of your surgery (just with one swallow of water to get them down) and sometimes they don't want you to take anything. So make sure you ask (and ask again if you're not sure) to find out exactly what you should do.

Best wishes to you, sister!

I usually take them with me and the nurse locks them in a cabinet next the bed and gives them to you when you need them. Sometimes I just take them with me and hold on to them myself as they are strict on giving them out. If you have trouble sleeping, unless the dr who has done the op has written something up for you, they wont give you anything else. Its best to ask your doc for scripts beforehand, so that way the nursing staff will not hesitate in giving you your meds. Good luck
