Medications

I have been talking to my doctor about pain medications to take orally after I get off the morphine pump. My doctor said that hardly anyone gets sick from taking percoset. My friend, who is an LPN, said that is not true. She recommended taking Lortab or something with hydrocordone in it. Can anyone recommend medications that worked on the pain really well while not making you feel sick? I would like to ask my doctor for something I feel comfortable taking up front. I would guess that since you don't really eat anything substantial the day of or even the day after surgery, that you are taking these medications on a relatively empty stomach. Thanks again for the advice.

Unfortunately, there's no way to know what (if any) meds will make you sick without trying them.

Here's my advice: try what you're given. If you have a bad reaction, they'll try something else until they find the right thing.

I have never actually gotten sick from any pain med, and over the years (for various surgeries and injuries) I've taken morphine, codeine, percoset/percodan, vicodin, toradol and all the OTC stuff. Getting truly ill from the narcotics is not the norm, or they wouldn't use them!

I hope you have success with your pain relief!

Spotlight,
Hope you are doing well. Ok first let me say that percocet is oxycodone and tylenol - the only difference between hydrocodone (lortab) and oxycodone (percoset) is the molecule that the codone is attached to - hydro is a water molecule and oxy is an oxygen molecule. So it's the same medication just in a different compound. They all come in different strengths but it's the same narcotic and it works on the same opiate receptors. Both are prescribed for moderate to severe pain.

Personally for me any of the codone's make me sick when I take it. I have to take phenergan 25 mg with it every time I take it or it will make me nauseated. My Dr's usually prescribe the same amount of pills of phenergan as they do the Lortab.

If you usually get sick or nauseated with pain pills you can ask your Dr about the phenergan or reglan. Both of them work well and the phenergan makes the narcotic work better. Anything to keep from being nauseated.

I wish you the best and hope that everything goes well for you.

My doctor gave me loratab and it seemed to work for me and didnt make me sick. Now tylenol with codeine makes my heart flutter but I have also used darvocet with my hand surgery and it did fine also.

I too can't take some narcotics. Plan to talk to the anetheasialogist (spelling?) this coming week to see what they can do for me. I can't take codiene, morphine, demoral .... really get sick to my stomach and the last thing I need to do is feel like urping like I've done with previous hospital stays. Sure hope they have a miracle drug that cuts the pain down to a tolerable level and won't make me sick.

Any one else out ther having to go through this and also diabetic, type 2 like I am ? Know I might heal slower because of this and it's harder to keep the glucose levels on an even keel after going through surgery. Will this be a major concern, as if I'm not worried enough !
