Keeping Ovaries and PMS

Just thought I'd add nother twist to the ovary saga. My hyst is two weeks aways Im keeping my left ovary (my right was removed because of endo and peritonitis). At the moment Im suffering my usual (hopefully last) pre-menstural syndrome and its a shocker (beware) - Im so touchy, I woke up with palptiations during the night and my road rage and language is at its finest, not to mention the usual swollen belly and chocolate cravings.

As Im keeping my ovary after the hyst, will I just be as grumpy and emotional as ever each month. My DR wants me to keep my ovary as Im 40.
:hair: Heaven help those around me.

Keeping Ovaries and PMS

Hi Ozjules,

I kept my ovaries with my LSH. I am 10 months post op now and have mild PMS each month. Sore breasts and some irritability. However, I have no more monthly bloating and no more aunt flows.

Best wishes,

Mary

Keeping Ovaries and PMS

Hi ozjules,

I kept both ovaries and am a year post op. For the most part, I have no pms symptoms at all. Every once in a while I'll get some mild ones, but nothing bad at all.

We can't predict how any one will do after surgery but sending s that all will go well for you.

Blessings
Judy

Keeping Ovaries and PMS

Hi,
I am 6 weeks post-op and kept both ovaries.

I've already had my first PMS cycle. I call it that because there's no bleeding, bloating, gas, cramps, etc. I had some mild mood swings and irritability but it was NOTHING like before.

Best of luck!

Keeping Ovaries and PMS

I had one ovary removed at the time of my hyster 3 1/2 years ago. I still get PMS each month, sometimes it's mild and other times it's pretty drastic....pretty much the same as before I had the hyster.

Symptoms I still get: Mild and occasional ovarian pain, breast tenderness, mood swings.

Symptom no longer present: Bloating, cramping and Aunt Flo (Don't miss those 3 at all!!!)

Keeping Ovaries and PMS

I am so glad you asked this - it was going to be my next post! I have been trying to read a lot of older posts to get an idea...

I am going in next week for TAH with BOS to be determined during the surgery! I have finally figured out that I suffer from PMS - pretty bad and getting worse - but not PMDD (yet - does it progress to that?)

At first I wanted Dr. to do anything to spare the ovaries! Now, I am not so sure! We have agreed that if there is anything wrong with them, they come out - if they are healthy - they stay in. I am totally ok with this and it makes sense.

But, now I am thinking, I want them out! Why keep dragging thisout when we can get it done now - I don't want to still have PMS!

Or will not having periods be enough? I am 34. HELP!

Here is a link to a current H.S. forum on the ovaries.

Very informative. At 34, I could suggest doing all the research you can about ovary removal. One thing is...when they are removed, they cannot be put back.

Best wishes,

Mary

Keeping Ovaries and PMS

Mary (Historylady) makes a very good point! Remember if you choose to let your ovaries go you will be trading PMS for menopause. Both have their drawbacks, so please make an educated decision

Keeping Ovaries and PMS

Whether you keep one ovary or both ovaries you WILL still have whatever pms or PMDD symptoms that you currently suffer. The only way to get away from pms or PMDD with a hysterectomy is to remove the ovaries. With PMDD sufferers our bodies react to too much estrogen and after a hysterectomy with removal of the ovaries PMDD sufferers can still get irritable (not so much extreme rage like before, but irritable) if an estrogen suppliment isn't taken. So, that is another valid question to consider when having your ovaries removed, are you able to take HRT or not to help with the irritability, hot flashes, etc.???

Good Luck
JOSIE
