I have heard 20 minutes then 40 minutes rest. I think any amount of walking is safe walking as long as you're not going up stairs or walking up hills outside. The more you get up early on, the better you feel. You sound worried about what to expect, and its not nearly as bad as people make you think it will be. The walking kind of comes naturally. If your abdomin starts to feel more sore than it was when you first got up, then its probably time to rest for a little bit.

YOu may find that you only want to do 5-10 minutes at a time. The important thing is to be able to sit down when you want to, and to build up gradually.

I started walking in the hospital - part way down the corridor and back, then a bit farther then all the way to the end.

When I got home it took about a week before I felt up to going all the way around the block - (Mostly because there was no where to sit and rest and I was a bit nervous).

slow but steady--- no undue stress - listen to your body!

Hi there,
I would think that any walking that you are able to do with comfort is "safe" walking.

I starting walking the first day in the hospital - they had a walker that you could stand up in and put your arms on some nice padded rests - it was really comfortable. I used that as much as possible - I was doing 5-10 laps around the ward every couple of hours. It helps get things moving again.

Once I got home, the doctors said I should do at least 10 minutes every hour - but it didn't have to be 10 straight minutes - at first I did little trips inside around all the room or laps around the dining room table. When I felt tired I would sit down or lay down and then get up again.

Just take it slow and easy and don't push yourself to do more - if you feel tired rest!!!

Hang in there!

How Much Walking At Home Is Good Walking.

I am 6 weeks post-op tomorrow.

Today DH accompanied me on a walk around the block. We were gone probably almost 20 minutes and I took it slow. It is pretty icy and cold but the sun was shining and DH was home so could catch me if I slipped (one of my biggest fears when walking outside).

It was my first 'long' walk since operation.

Have gone around the mall but footing is better since indoors and I usually get to stop to have a coffee with a friend.

I have to admit I feel it now. My pelvic region aches and I am tired. I did have a cat nap after the walk. The walk wasn't so difficult but the footing on the ice and snow probably did it since I was trying really hard to not slip.

It did feel good to go out though and really enjoyed being outdoors!

My advice is to take it easy and rest when you need to. Don't go far in case you tire out. Walking one way is fine but you still have to get home!

Early post-op I walked around my house for short periods of time in order to stretch my legs out. Then tried the mall with a girlfriend with periods of sitting in order to rest. But I still haven't been out for more than 60-90 minutes for outings unless I am sitting a lot. Tire out quickly.

Enjoy your walks, Girls!
