Prempro

Ok ladies , I need some advice, I went to the doctor today for my four week checkup, I am currently on the Climara Patch , with no side effects and no hot flashes , night sweats etc .... she gave me a prescription for PREMPRO. I didnt look at it before I left her office , I know that there have been many problems with that medication , I dont feel like I need to switch , at least not at this point , I am only 31 years old , and dont know if the side effects will be that bad for me or not , but I dont need any additional health problems , I have had my share recently , but I dont want to offend my doc either by questioning what she gave me. I dont know what to do , I have enough of the patch to get me through the next three weeks , so I have time to think about it . I need to know if anyone else if on the medication and any problems that they have had since starting it. Thanks

Honestly if your Drs good she wont be affended at all. Let her know how you feel. I would call her tomarrow and even speak to her nurse with your fears. Trust me its not going to affend.

Prempro

mporter,

I had my surgery a few days after you and I am not on ERT because of endo. I've been researching quite a bit and feel really overwhelmed by it all. I thought if you had a hyst you should only take estrogen, with no progesterone.

Doesn't the Prempro have progesterone? I hope I didn't confuse you further! I thought maybe she mentioned a reason for wanting you to be on one with both.

Prempro

I am about 20 years old than you, and I have not had surgery yet, but I have been on just about every drug known to womankind. Prempro did not work for me. The patch worked pretty well. I could be mistaken, but I think Prempro is a premarin derivative.
Usually, I prefer the direct route as in, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." If the patch was working, tell her you want to stick with it. I have a friend who was just switched over to Prempro and did not do well.
The best drug I've found is Estrace and combinations of it.

Prempro

(((mporter))), I'd give the DR a call and ask why she wants you to switch to Prempro if you were doing well on the Climara patch. Make sure the DR herself answers you and not the nurse, receptionist, whatever (personal experience here ).

Prempro is a combination HRT consisting of Premarin (a mixture of conjugated equine estrogens) and Provera (a synthetic progestin, not the same as natural progesterone). It's generally contraindicated in women without a uterus, unless you have a history of endo and the DR is wanting to ensure that any remaining bits can't re-grow. Prempro (and in particular, the Provera part of it) is the HRT associated with a slightly higher risk of breast cancer according to the WHI study results... so unless there is a specific reason why your DR feels you need the Provera, I'd stay with the patch you were feeling fine on.

Let us know what your DR says, OK?

s,
-Linda
