Fruits for movement

Hi! This is a silly question, but, besides prunes, what are the best fruits for bowel movements? I don't want to have a problem with my bowels after surgery. Is it a good idea to start eating these before surgery? I will be doing a bowel prep the night before surgery. Are bran muffins also good? I have a great recipe for raisin bran muffins. What about Metimucil afterwards?

Thanks for the advice and happy movements!!

I don't think it's a silly question... I was wondering the same thing (I hate prunes). I was also wondering if a cup of coffee would kick start the action.... it always does now (sorry if thats to much info).

Yikes - definitely not silly! I have to eat a lot of fiber due to all the iron I'm taking - ugh!! At various times I've used All Bran cereal, stewed prunes, stewed figs, psyillium (the main ingredient in Metameusil (sp?), and flaxseed meal. I take the psyllium as you would metameusil, mixed in a large glass of water. I like it because it is plain (no sweeteners or flavors added). And, I like the recipe for bran muffins on the All Bran box, too. When I use the flaxseed meal, I sprinkle it on my food. Just a note though, flaxseed meal does contain omega-3 fats which can thin the blood. Not sure how strong the effect is, so I'd suggest checking with your Dr. before trying that one.

I also make sure I drink a lot of water throughout the day. I can't wait until I can stop taking my iron!! Good luck!

Fruits for movement

Hi,
I have always had a problem with constipation. The fruit that always works for me is cantalope. It is sometimes hard to obtain if it isn't in season but it definitely works. The other day I resorted to some prune juice and I mixed it with a little cranberry juice.

I hope this helps.

Take care.

I love raisins.... I think those bran muffins sound like a winner.

Most fruit works pretty well. Raw apples, melons -- whatever you like best! Oh, and my grandma used to swear by dried apricots.

Coffee also works for me --

And no, this isn't a silly question at all. Almost everyone needs to know this at one time or another.

Best wishes to all!

more info for bowel movements

Not silly at all...
Some good cereals to try are Raison Bran, All Bran, they also say cooked rolled oats with some raison in it will also help with bowel movements. Bran muffins are great and so is whole wheat bread to have as toast or as a sandwich. DO NOT eat bananas.... i was told when my DD was sick with the runners ( really lose bowel to the point that when she passed any gas ....she had to get changed.) anyways the doctor said that they bind you... make you constipated. But then my DD was 4 years old at the time, and in hospital with shagelia. Hope this helps you some.

galvatron,

I want to be like you! Chocolate is always a good answer to any of my other problems. I don't know why I didn't think about it for this one.

Thanks for the advice ladies. I will make sure I have plenty of fruit on hand. I believe I will make a batch of the Raisin Bran muffins also before I go to the castle. Since the batter can stay in the fridge for a long time it will be ok when I come home.

Have a great day Sisters!

Hi!
I wanted to add that any of the Kashi brand cereals (i.e. "Good Friends, Crunch, Heart to Heart and the waffles) are great sources of fiber and protein combined. They are great for weight loss programs, too (because of the high fiber content, combined with protein and "good carbs").

I also drink coffee to "get er going"...! Also, salads are good for "movement" and apples (high fiber), oranges, cantalope, raisins.

Best wishes!!!!!
