Pre-op & High Blood Pressure

I had my first of two pre-ops today. I pass with flying colores except my blood pressure. It was high enough that he started me on medicine today to hopefully start working. My surgery is only 5 days away. Not sure if it will work. My DR told me that the A-Dr will make that decision on the day of the surgery. I'm wondering if anybody else here on this site has or had high BP when they had their surgery. Did they take any special precausions?

I guess I find out more tomorrow at the castle's pre-op.

Pre-op & High Blood Pressure

My husband had emergency surgery last summer and his bp was high due to his agitation. They did an echo-carido-something and cleared him for surgery.

Pre-op & High Blood Pressure

Hi greenlady;
I have had high blood pressure for a while now.
At my Pre-OP appt. the told me to take my BP medicine before coming to the hospital in the morning with as little water as possible.

You do what your doctor tells you to do!

A "funny" thing, after my surgery, my BP has been the lowest it has been in years!

I still take my medicine but it is much lower now!

I hope everything works out for you!

high BP

My DH just had major back surgery - he had been in incredible pain, non-stop, not sleeping due to pain. His pre-op BP was dangerously high - I was taking it regularly at home and it was very discouraging despite all the meds he was taking to get it down, plus diet. Anyway, one of the cardio docs told him that being in pain elevates BP 25-30 points. Sure enough, after his surgery, his BP is very good. Caffeine and nicotine also will elevate BP. cj

Pre-op & High Blood Pressure

Hey Greenlady,

My BP was high when I did my pre-op, but the nurse said it was to be expected. I guess it wasn't too bad. I usually have very low BP 110/70, but it was 158/80 that day. Try to relax (ok I know that's hard) - do some breathing exercies and see if that helps - get a massage or a facial - something nice for you.

Take care and let us know how you are.
